Faced with rapidly increasing public debt and an World Trade Organization decision that its market-distorting, third world poverty-reinforcing cotton subsidy program is illegal, and awarding Brazil the right to impose up to $800 million a year in trade sanctions against the United States, the United States government:
A. Acceded to the decision, allowing the Brazilian government to impose sanctions on American trade;
B. Realized that cotton subsidies by a military and economic superpower are unconscionable and also add hundreds of millions per year to the national debt and therefore announced the termination of cotton subsidies; or
C. Offered to subsidize Brazilian cotton to the tune of $150 million a year on top of existing subsidies of American cotton.
You know the answer. Note that at least three of the four Congressmen writing to oppose this silliness are known as ideological true believers, and that two have R’s after their name and two have D’s. Note also that they are tilting at windmills. Congress’ third party remains fully in control.
Go Jeff Flake. He even represents a cotton-growing state.Report
…. I honestly can’t think of a way this could make less sense. Once again, Obama is being disappointing.Report
If we stop taking money from the American people to give to cotton growers, the cotton growers will have to raise their prices and do you know who will pay the price for that?
The American People. Indeed, The Children. They’ll be wearing polyester or rayon or, heaven forbid, running around naked.
While I could see how someone perverse would want children running around naked like so many 4th World Countries have them do, I don’t see why a country that finally has found the will to provide these children health care wouldn’t clothe them as well.
Have you no decency, sir?Report
@Jaybird, Yeah, I was going to make a “why do you hate freedom?” joke; but your one works better.Report
