Awhile back, I asked for recommendations on good WWI books since the book I had chosen was pretty weak. I wound up going with the Keegan book, which seemed to be the most recommended overview book. I’m about 2/3 of the way through, and it’s excellent, an outright page-turner in many sections, and exceedingly easy to follow. So thanks to all who gave me suggestions, and I’m sure I’ll be getting some of the other books that were recommended.

I’m glad the Keegan book is working for you. I also recommend his life of Winston Churchill, which is actually rather short but it’s pretty comprehensive. Plus, Keegan throws in some great personal anecdotes about himself as bookends that are the highlights of the book, in my opinion.Report
Thanks for the recommendation. I’ve just finished Shelby Foote’s Civil War history, which is also an outright page-turner in many sections, and reasonmably easy to follow. When I’m ready for more horrifying carnage, I’ll give the Keegan a try.Report
Keegan’s good; he undercounts, however, the non-Western Front stuff. I’d strongly recommend “Victory 1918” by Alan Palmer.Report
