On his Wimbledon final’s victory and his 15th (and record breaking) Grand Slam Championship. I can’t speak to all the others (the Rod Lavers and Bill Tildens of yore), but Federer is the greatest tennis player I’ve watched in my life. I remember watching (later) Jimmy Conors, John McEnroe, Ivan Lendl, Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, and Bjorn Borg. All great and amazing players. But in my mind Federer is the greatest to date. In fact I would say he along with Tiger Woods is the greatest athlete/sportsman of this decade. I think those two are the greatest athletes since the retirement of Jordan and Gretzky.
That said, I have to feel for Andy Roddick. Man played his heart and body out and has got nothing to be ashamed of. He took Federer to the absolute edge. Hopefully someday soon Roddick will get his chance to hoist a championship at the All England Club.
federer is hands down the greatest of his generation. don’t know if you saw mcenroe’s interview with laver, borg, and sampras. he really put sampras on the spot asking who is the greatest. very hard to answer. technology and the change in synthetic surfaces makes era to era comparisons very tough. that being said i would have to vote for laver. only man to ever win two grand slams. changed the game with his use of topspin and missed playing in any majors for five years at the height of his career. laver was the consumate shot maker. think about it in one two year period 62 and 69 the slam years laver won more than half of federer’s career slam titles. roger’s feat is a tremendous accomplishment . to me though, laver’s accomplishments places him on a different level.Report
