Overturning Proverbs
So a homeless dude comes into the church today (which is a regular occurrence) and asks for a big garbage bag for his stuff (that’s rather irregular). Ok, so I go get him the only kind of big garbage bags we keep in the church: see-through biodegradable green ones. Then he gets pretty frustrated and tells me I should have some black non see-through bags. I say well I’m sorry this is all we got. He wasn’t really a jerk to me about it, but it definitely put to lie the old saying: Beggars Can’t be Choosers. Apparently they can. Maybe they shouldn’t be, but Yes They Can!
Not surprising.
What I understand about homeless persons is that their possessions are of immense value to them, and that they can easily get stolen.
He wouldn’t want to advertise what he has in his bag because he might have something that other homeless people would not mind fighting him for.Report
That’s true and he said as much and I said I understood. He agreed that I understood him. And you’re that would be why. But I think that furthers the point that Beggars Can be Choosers–and in fact probably need to be in some moments.Report
That’s what he gets for stopping by an Anglican church. The Catholics would have had some black bags for sure.Report
No doubt. The irony of course is that the reason we have the biodeg. bags is that the environmentalist people in the congregation kept telling us we shouldn’t have our old (large black, no see-through) bags. I just find it very odd that so many people are so insistent on what type of garbage bags I should use.
Maybe I use should tell the justice group people about this and they could have a fight with the environmental group? To the winner goes the choice of bag du garbage.Report
