In a recent post, Conor P. Williams and I have a bit of a back-and-forth about baseball and the late Montreal Expos. It made me think of a recent essay at The Barnstormer by Andrew Forbes, Forgiving Washington. Andrew, a lifelong Expos fan, writes of the demise of his team and its transformation into the Washington Nationals.

I remember the dark days of 1992 when the Giants had been as good as sold to a new owner that was going to move them to Tampa Bay. It took a series of miracles: Peter Magowan putting together a group of local investors in no time flat, the National League pressuring Bob Lurei to sell to local ownership instead, and Lurie agreeing to a lower offer to keep the team in San Francisco. I completely empathize with Expos fans.

I’ve lost two CFL teams here (though I didn’t care too much about the second one), not by relocation; they just folded. Apparently, we’ll be getting another one soon. We’ll see how that goes.Report
