Crew Wanted for a Journey Down the East Coast on Mon Tiki
Ordinary Times readers and writers both:
After months of deliberation, my wife and I have formulated a plan for ourselves and Mon Tiki this winter, and you may have a part to play in our plan.
In mid-December Mon Tiki will begin working her way south in a combination of short coastwise jumps and Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) cruising, staring in Montauk NY and terminating as far south as conditions of time and weather allow.
Possible ports of call on the route are: Huntington NY, Brooklyn NY, Barnegat Light NJ, Cape May NJ, Baltimore MD, Annapolis MD, Norfolk VI, Orient NC, Beaufort NC, Wrightsville Beach NC, Myrtle Beach SC, Charleston SC, Hilton Head Island SC, Saint Simons Island GA, Fernadina Beach FLA, St. Augustine FLA, and others.
We are seeking crew for purposes of both collegiality and safety. Experience with sailing, boats, or navigation not especially required. Our sailing will be in either sheltered waters of the ICW or in weather-dependant near shore jumps. You will never be out of sight of land or cell phone range. Your time commitment can range from as little as day to a week or more. Sign on for all of the trip, or just a day here or there.
Warm clothes, good rain gear and the ability to enjoy self-inflicted discomfort a must. You are responsible for your own transportation to and from Mon Tiki.
Additionally, for those of you who cannot come sailing, I would like to meet as many of you as possible along the way. Boat don’t move very fast, what we’ll cover in a day you’ll cover in an hour by car. So for any of you living along the route, please do make an effort to get in your car and intercept us along the way, or even join on for a couple of hours. It’ll be fun!
Interested persons are encouraged to email me at david at sailingmontauk dot com.
Of course I will be chronicalling the trip here at Ordinary Times. It should be a wonderful, relatively low-stress adventure. I hope you’ll join me!
Natasha and I will be in Florida in the late winter to visit with family, about 100 miles south of Cape Canaveral. Any idea if Mon Tiki will be that far south and if so when? Because I have some flexibility on the timing…Report
I tell people if you want to use a sailboat as transportation you have to get into a 19th century mind-set, as in “The tradewinds never set that year so we didn’t make it home till 2014.”
That said, I think Mon Tiki you will be in more or less the same place at the same time. Looking forward to taking you and yours for a ride!Report
Ah, well.
You will not be heading north. And I am north of you.
Ah, well.Report
This is one of the sacrifices of my currently, admittedly blessed circumstance. Just yesterday I was noting that my yet hoped for circumnavigation of Newfoundland will have to wait until such a time that I am not indentured to Mon Tiki during the summer months.Report
Not that I can make it, but I assume your going thru the Canal south of Norfolk that Washington surveyed thru the great dismal swamp. (Dismal Swamp Canal). It is interesting that once upon a time a canal existed across NJ, and the ICW was supposed to follow it but there were not sufficient funds.Report
If I only had more free time. Le sigh!Report
