Friday Jukebox
I haven’t done one of these in a while and this one is certainly not a new recording by any means (Domino Records, 1960 and available on the “Domino Records Story” CD). I’m a record-collecting nut and also listen to a lot of blues and early rock’n’roll; so I’ve heard many takes on Got my Mojo Working. This one was recorded three years after Muddy Waters made the (Preston Foster) song famous by a New Orleans singer named Joyce Harris, who also recorded as “Sinner Strong” and with her sister as “Judy and Joyce”, but did not cut a full album as far as I know. Anyway, this take on the song still blows me away every time I listen to it.
Thanks for this, Rufus. I think I’m now in love with her.
The good news keep on rolling in — at least as of 2010, she’s still actively performing.Report
Yeah, I knew she was doing interviews and I’m pretty sure she’s gotten into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. There really needs to be a compilation album for her. That song “No Way Out” is also great and her song with the Slades “I Cheated”, a response song to the Slades’ hit “You Cheated” has more soul than 100 current songs. At some point, Sundazed or someone needs to do a comp record for her since her stuff is on three or four labels. If I ever get money, I’d put one out myself. At the very least, I’d buy it.Report
