Survey Says…?!

Ted Cruz had this to say on Sean Hannity’s radio program regarding the SCOTUS rulings released over the last two days:

Today is some of the darkest 24 hours in our nation’s history.

I heard this life and thought, “Surely he must be joking!”  But, no, he really said that.  Even giving Cruz the benefit of the doubt and assuming he was referring to his perception of flaws in our governmental process as opposed to, say, just being bitter that the ACA and marriage equality were now the law of the land in our nation, I submit to him days that, at the very least, rival yesterday and today for darkest in our nation’s history:

1.) Every day prior to the ratification of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, a series of over 30,000 24 hour periods during which human beings could legally be held as slaves.

2.) Every day prior to the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, a series of over 50,000 24 hour periods during which women could be legally denied the right to vote.

Ya know what… I’ll just stop there.  I mean, we could also look at all the days during which child labor was legal, during which segregation was legal, during which spousal rape was legal.  We could look at all the 24 hour periods during which our nation engaged in a bloody civil war.  We could look at the Trail of Tears and other abuses of Native Americans.  There’s the attack on Pearl Harbor and the terrorist attacks of 9/11, two days our country was attacked on our own soil by foreign enemies.

Now… MAYBE in 50 or 100 years we’ll look at the events of June 25/26 of the year 2015 and say, “That is the day our democracy/legal system/way of life irreparably started going down the crapper because of SCOTUS’s action.  That is one of the darkest days in our nation’s history.”  But I’ll bet dollars to doughnuts we don’t.

I don’t know if it is more sad or scary that we accept this type of bullshit from our elected officials.
