Friday Jukebox – The Decline of Culture
In a recent post, Rufus referred to Hamilton as the “epicenter for the decline of culture in Ontario“. So how about some music from Hamiltonians.
And do you know who was born in Halifax Hamilton? Nicole Appleton. Who, you may wonder, is Nicole Appleton? One fourth of All Saints, possibly the best girl group of 1990s.
Alexisonfire was a seminal band in the Canadian Screamo scene at the beginning of the millennium… you might be able to argue that they were the Canadian Screamo scene. Their drummer is from Hamilton,
(Be warned. If you don’t know what Screamo is, you may not want to. And if you really want to, I’d suggest you check out this band; they’re much better.)
Alexisonfire’s Jordan Hastings isn’t the only drummer from Hamilton. So, yeah, maybe it is the epicenter of the decline of culture.
That young man certainly seem angry about something.
Seriously, this doesn’t sound that different from Black Flag.Report
Alexisonfire qualifies as post-hardcore, so the comparison to Black Flag (one of the seminal hardcore bands) is apt. However, Henry Rollins didn’t quite do that death-metal snarl, though. And Greg Ginn’s guitar stylings are wonderfully/ridiculously unique.Report
In all fairness to Alexisonfire, they did provide a nurturing petri dish for the considerable talents of their guitarist Dallas Green, aka City and Colour.
Then again, he was born in St. Catherine’s, not Hamilton.Report
And a nurturing perti dish is necessary for the growth of culture.Report
If Dallas Green were from Hamilton, you can bet your Yankee husband I would have posted some City & Colour.
Even listening to Alexisonfire, it’s clear that he’s the most enjoyable part.Report
Shouldn’t that be “You can bet your Yankee manager“?Report
No Simply Saucer or Forgotten Rebels?
Pshhhh. Go listen to Thursday some more.Report
(Oh, and no Teenage Head?! PSSHH.)Report
To be fair to Hamilton, three great bands came from here: Forgotten Rebels, Teenage Head, and Simply Saucer.Report
Oh, and the Noble Savages, of course.Report
Oh, okay- I guess Matt beat me to it.Report
