How Mitt Romney Can Win My Vote…
I wish I could claim this idea as my own…
A reader wrote into Bill Simmons and suggested the following idea:
Mitt Romney ponies up $50M of his own money, pays the NFL refs, and returns sanity to the single most popular thing in America. Boom. Ladies and gentlemen, your next president.
The singe most popular thing in America? When did the college football refs go on strike?Report
Maybe.
However, I’d be more favorably impressed if he came out and publicly scolded the owners and told them that skilled workers need to be paid adequate compensation. (Bonus points if explains that only imbeciles would hurt their business this badly for the sake of a small increase in profits).
That would go a long way toward ameliorating the Bain vulture capitalist image.Report
That would be space fishing awesome.Report
He’d probably scold the refs for wanting to be entitled to too much.Report
I’d imagine Romney 1. doesn’t know what’s going on in the NFL and 2. probably isn’t inclined to side against some of his friends, who own NFL franchises.Report
He probably watches soccer.Report
Grrr…..Report
*KICK!*Report
Nob-
He wouldn’t necessarily be siding against his friends. The owners would get the deal they wanted, at least in terms of what they are on the hook for.Report
How could Mitt Romney win my vote?
Off the island.Report
Ha!Report
At this point Romney should offer to drop out of the race in exchange for immunity from the IRS. If his candidacy leads to the end of the carried interest abuse by private equity managers, then at least he will have done some good.Report

Ain’t that the truth?Report
This whole ref thing, on the heels of the Chicago strike, is…interesting. There’s a post there (for someone more insightful than myself) — I can tell that just by watching a friend of mine’s Facebook posts.
He went into full meltdown about teachers daring to strike, but is now melting down because the NFL won’t buckle under to referee demands. And it’s not a private/public divide either.Report
Who are you referring to with “he”? What has either candidate said about the ref lockout?Report
“a friend of mine’s” == “he”Report
Thanks. Clearly I misread that grossly.Report
