Still Republican Kryptonite
Submitted: Bill Clinton is to Republicans as Chipper Jones is to the New York Mets. For all of his “elder statesman” status, he still knows how to embarrass your closer with a walk off homer. Watching Clinton deliver an impassioned political speech is not altogether different from how people used to talk about watching Ted Williams hit.
Except that “our sacred honor” was the Declaration of Independence. “A more perfect union” is the Constitution replacing the Articles of Confederation government, over a decade later. But screw it, he was on a roll.
I speak well of Bill Clinton, and the parts I caught while walking by were quite [mostly] statesmanlike. But I was closing up for the night with the transcript of his speech on the screen, noticed that and wondered if anybody else did.Report
Clinton didn’t read no prepared remarks.
Clinton’s speech was 45 minutes of teleprompter-frying glory (literal). He was supposed to take twenty.
Obama had to intervene with a hug to get Clinton to stop talking…Report

Yeah, but he sure can mix metaphors like a former southern governor makes coconut pie in a steel mill with both hands tied behind his back in the middle of a snowstorm trek uphill five miles both ways.Report

Clinton, stage hog that he is, took off on a riff last night and really stuck it to Romney-Ryan. Gotta love the Big Dog. Also have to wonder if he’s going to end up upstaging Obama.Report
What I don’t get is why the Romney campaign would make Clinton’s welfare reform a key part of their message. Did they not see this coming? Maybe they’re banking on no one watching. That’s probably a relatively safe bet.
Also, Sandra Fluke sets off some really ugly things in people.Report
You would think they’d have realized that Clinton would strike back, but there’s something very tone deaf about the Romney campaign that reflects Romney himself. They just don’t seem to understand how little people like or trust Romney. Those attacks on one of the hallmarks of the Clinton legacy probably pissed Clinton off and pushed him to take a much more front-and-center role at the DNC than he might have otherwise.Report
Clinton lied, as usual.

Are we loving Clinton for being statesmanlike or hating him for lying? I can never keep this straight. Being a down-the-line partisan must give one an awful case of whiplash.Report
The sky is blue. Bill Clinton lies. We love him anyway.Report
I feel so sorry for you.
Your priests are corrupt slime-balls (accusing Sandusky’s abuse victims of “asking for it? Really?), your party has centered on hating the Other (with gender and race making up most of the Othering), your candidates are a sociopath and a pathological liar.
But to admit that your enemies (and they are enemies) might be right and Your Side might be wrong is a gut-wrenching experience. So I suppose we should try to forgive the racist (such as anything referencing Al Sharpton), sexist comments.
I’ll do my best but, dayum, you make it hard.
MFarmer could probably stand to read this as well.Report
Also, nothing GAO said contradicts anything Clinton said, so I’m not even sure what we’re talking about here. Clinton says Obama didn’t remove the work requirement, GAO says he changed it and needs to submit his change to Congress. The only person who says he “gutted” it is Romney, and Romney is lying through his teeth.Report
He gutted it by agreeing in principle to waivers which have not actually been granted.Report
That could be about right, Mike. I was pointing out that there is another side. Here’s the latest:

Even if you’re correct, if Obama is re-elected, a gutting is in the cards. Therefore Clinton’s defense can only be Obama didn’t gut welfare reform yet.Report
