Way back in the 80s, my mom decided it would a good idea to buy a VCR instead of renting one when we would get movies (so long ago, in fact, it was Beta!). The idea, clearly and firmly articulated to the kids was that it was not for recording and watching TV shows.
…until Mom realized she could tape cheers when she was at choir rehearsal.
