Taking the helmet out of football?
The Journal says that getting rid of helmets and the traditional three point stance may reduce the risk of head injuries on the football field. Pretty interesting stuff, although these solutions were first mentioned in a great GQ article on sports concussions I blogged awhile back.
I’d recommend going back to a modern version of the old leatherhead helmets. Rugby and Aussie-rules players (and oddballs like Peter Cech) wear these when they’re healing from a head injury (or they’re just oddballs). They’re something like kevlar and padding. Enough to protect against lacerations and minor bumps, but not enough to encourage players to turn their heads into missiles, like in modern football.Report
