Mugwumps!
I hope I’m not jeopardizing E.D. Kain’s perch at New Majority (congrats, E.D.!), but I do take issue with David Frum’s selective appreciation for one of my favorite 19th century political movements. In addition to defending free trade, sound money, and a meritocratic civil service, the Mugwumps were also noted anti-imperialists. I wonder if Frum will rediscover that aspect of their historic legacy?
I will be glad when the U.S. can sit of the North American frontporch, train a few smart guard dogs to keep things safe, enjoy its successes at home, completely open up trade, and allow countries like Afghanistan and Iraq to find their own way.Report
