Weird
Jon Krolik of the aptly-titled “Cavs: The Blog” has a fun entry (complete with visuals!) on the recent revelation that LeBron James did in fact smoke pot in high school. Which is weird, because three of the our most successful public figures – James, Barack Obama, and Michael Phelps – have now admitted to casual drug use. What’s more, their backgrounds cut across every racial, social and cultural divide imaginable. And yet our omnipotent Drug Czar continues to insist that “marijuana is dangerous” and “legalization is not in the president’s vocabulary.” Like I said, weird.
Anyway, here’s your Friday Night Jukebox:

From a purely political standpoint, I can understand the Obama/Kerlikowske position because it’s safe. I mean, the guy says some cops acted “stupidly” and it becomes a huge controversy. Imagine the response if he seriously suggested legalizing pot.
How about we smoke pot anyway?Report
The legality of pot is an important legislative question, which affects federal law, something the President has an important role in shaping.
The President has no role whatsoever to play in evaluating the appropriateness of the Cambridge MA police department’s response to a lone incident involving state law. And given the tremendous amount of power that the U.S. President possesses compared with local officials, a President’s interjection in local affairs invariably carries a whiff of omnipotence. In other words, mind your own bloody business, President Obama. That he can’t understand that his comments were inappropriate is quite foreboding.
But I do look forward to hearing President Obama’s opinion of whether voting against my city’s proposed tax raise would be stupid, and whether my state school’s hiring of new staff is fiscally irresponsible.Report

Yeah, the last thing in the world we want is a leader who has opinions on stuff. Pander to everybody at once, Obama! IT’S WHY WE ELECTED YOU!!!!Report

Have you watched the news today? If so…you might want to revise that statement. Seems that this understanding has, indeed, sunk in for our hapless president.Report
Yeah damn him for answering a question he was asked. Presidents get asked about all sorts of stuff. cope.Report
I probably haven’t heard that Cypress Hill song in a decade or more. Good times. That brings back some memories.
It seems that marijuana is definitley heading in the direction of legalization. California is functioning pretty well as a test for legalization. And that is the ideal role for states to play as the ‘labs of democracy’. I’m pretty okay with it being legalized though I would want to see the same rough battery of laws that we have around liquor.Report
So long as homebrewing is allowed, I’m fine with the government having “contributing to the delinquincy of a minor” laws related to weed.Report
