Friday Jukebox
Well, since no one else has done a jukebox, I’ll put one up.
I’m crushing on Curtis Mayfield today, but since, as the token Canuck, I feel compelled to offer some CanCon, here’s Bran Van 3000 (sampling Curtis Mayfield):

Well, it’s no Rush 😉Report
i like the idea of a van filled with so much bran they had to append a huge future-retro style number to the name just to express how powerful the avalanche of soluble and insoluble fibers are going to be.
hey there’s lots of good canadistian bands, like godspeed you black emperor. and skinny puppy before 1995. ritchie hawtin? is he still canadian?Report
Hey, it’s not godspeed you black emperor., it’s Godspeed You! Black Emperor (formerly, Godspeed You Black Emperor!)
Get yr random punctuation straight! 🙂
A buddy of mine actually wandered by mistake into a show of theirs, knowing nothing about them, and was completely blown away.
LOVE LOVE LOVE PLASTIKMAN, and weirdly he came up on shuffle just as I was typing this (Are Friends Electrik?/Lodgikal Nonsense off of Artifakts (BC)).
How’d you do that?
I have most everything he did, except Closer.
Far as I know Hawtin is still Canadian, haven’t really listened to any of his non-Plastikman stuff.Report
i knew them with the exclamation point on the end and that’s how i’ll always know them. i haven’t seen the reformed gybe yet, probably won’t – i figure six times was enough back in the day. not that they weren’t always consistently great and all but i kinda feel like that ship has sailed. on the other hand i’m going to see swans again mid october so perhaps i’m just being fickle.
closer is not great, honestly. however, i really love consumed. i think the former is just too sparse to be enjoyable, and it lacks the kind of ugly edges like, say, pansonic or other experimental “techno” to act as a hook. it’s got some very interesting choices in terms of sound design and mixing but really not my thing.Report
Consumed is awesome. I got a goth friend of mine into Plastikman via that route, what could be darker than that one? It’s complete aural paranoia.
Remember when that kid got erroneously yet understandably busted for having the CD insert from Sheet One in his car? Good times.Report
i’ve always been curious if that story was a put-on by mute. it’s a little too good to check (except for the kid, who went through hell, of course).
are you into pansonic at all? its on the harsh side of things but their later works are more balanced in terms of rhythm and noise.
rrose is good for dark, kinda ugly techno. there used to be a few acts on ant zen that were good for this as well but it’s been years since i dipped my toes over in there. immanent starvation was pretty good at it, though.
i do heartily recommend godspeed live to anyone. actually, i recommend godspeed to anyone, particularly the first album, f#a# infinity. everyone loves that album. my mom loves that album. even some rush fans probably love that album, though only in secret, lest the other rush fans realize that someone has forsaken the true cross and tear them limb from limb.Report
I was going to say yes to pansonic but then realized I was thinking of Pan American, so I’ll have to check pansonic out, sounds intriguing.
My brother is a classical musician (brass) so he and I have very little musical overlap*, but I actually gave him the ‘Slow Riot for New Zer0 Kanada’ EP (whatever ‘EP’ means when it comes to GYBE) and he dug it. I dragged out my vinyl ‘Lift Yr Skinny Fists…’ recently for a spin.
*Although, when we were kids, he would play Smiths songs on his trombone, which was AWESOME.Report
pansonic is/was pretty great when they were on. only saw them live once, with hrvatski opening.
speaking of more canadians
– venetian snares
– tim hecker
– caribou (if you like that sort of thing)
and not canadians – the label secretly canadian is actually based in utah or some such. perhaps one of the founders was canadian, or found out as an adult his grandparents were canadian, such as an aryan nation leader might discover he is part jewish, but minus the racist tattoos.
mr. mcleod – what happens if a radio station or whatever doesn’t play the legally required amount of canadian content?Report
I do like and have actually seen Caribou a few times (once in fact in NYC when he was still Manitoba). Good stuff.Report
I’m not sure what the exact punishment process is. I think it can start with just a slap on the wrist telling the station to fall line, and can escalate to fines and license revocation, but I’m really not sure about that.Report
And, GYBE is indeed awesome. Never got to see them though.Report
Godspeed You! Black Emperor is fantastic. A good friend and co-blogger did his Master’s thesis on the Montreal music scene (it was more involved than that, but I can’t remember the specifics) and interviewed GY!BE for it.
I’ve been planning to use them on a Jukebox, but just haven’t gotten around to it yet. Stay tuned!
I never listened to much Skinny Puppy, but they had a good rep.
I don’t know if Hawtin is still Canadian.Report
Wait, wait, wait. I’ve never seen the ! after ‘Godspeed’ (see my note above).
We cannot in good conscience call ourselves music fans unless we are willing to be pedantic about this stuff. We owe it to ourselves and each other. Otherwise, what would we talk about at parties?Report
AND now you edited your comment, so I look extra ass-y.Report
(See below. You were absolutely right to make note of it.)Report
You’re absolutely right. I posted it then realized it was wrong, so I went back and fixed it.
THERE WAS NO WAY I COULD LET THAT STAND!Report
Yay, Bran Van! Next you will be playing Bullfrog. 😀 *pines for Montreal and then remembers she gets to go there in a few weeks*Report
I’m embarrassed to say that I do not know Bullfrog.
When are you going to Montreal and what are you doing there? (I still think that should be the locale for Leaguefest East.)Report
