Saturday Morning Gaming: The Outer Worlds Final Stretch
The gaming desert we find ourselves in has an oasis coming up. The Outer Worlds comes out in two weeks. We’ve discussed the game a couple of times before but, now, we are seriously in the final stretch.
I was really excited when I saw the announce trailer, but I’m over the moon because of the “Come to Halcyon” trailer:
I’m skeptical of pretty much every single “gameplay trailer” due to the whole “once bitten, twice shy” but this one seems to actually contain more than one or two seconds of gameplay
There’s also a “20 minutes of gameplay” video out there but while I’m okay with the marketing-kinda spoilers, I am already 100% on board so I want to experience the parts of the game that I’d see in that video for myself when I get the game and actually play it.
It looks like it has a Bioshock kinda vibe and a Fallout kinda vibe and I absolutely LOVE games that let you play through as either a good guy or a bad guy because that makes choosing good guy options feel vaguely more weighty. One of the things I didn’t like about Fallout 4 is that it felt like a lot of the choices had been removed from the game. Sure, you could pick between The Institute and The Brotherhood and The Railroad and that was a choice… but everything else felt like they took the RP out of the RPG. The moral choices were between being a jerk in a morally gray universe or being a nice guy in a morally gray universe.
Say what you will about Fallout 3, you got the option of disarming or activating an atomic bomb… and the fact that you could have blown it up made the fact that you could disarm it feel like disarming it mattered. (I admit that I blew it up once on my “evil playthrough” but after I beat the game like that, I immediately played through again as a good guy. I didn’t want to leave the world in that state.)
So I am going to get The Outer Worlds barring hearing that it bricks consoles (and, even then, I’ll wait to hear that there’s a patch coming). I’m looking forward to playing a game made in the mold of Fallout 3 rather than Fallout 4 (or, heaven help us, 76).
So… what are you playing?

This looks good–I didn’t realize it was coming out so soon. I’m still deep in No Man’s Sky, which is pretty good now. It’s a slow paced kind of game; sure, there’s conflict but that’s usually a matter of choice.
I like both fallout 3 and 4, but you make a fair point. I’m a fanboy for those type of games, so I’m not good for an objective opinion. I did like the settlement stuff in fallout 4–please let the next elder scrolls game have something like that–except let us build most anywhere.Report
