Weekend Plans Post: The Many Joys Of Carbs
After a Lenten fast of carbs for 46 days, the first meal with bread in it felt like a sunburst in my belly. I woke up at the crack of dawn and went downstairs to cut a mini-boule of french bread and sprinkled cheese on it then put it under the broiler. I whipped up an egg for the microwave egg cooker and, when the cheese was browning, I put pre-cooked jalapeño bacon on top of the cheese to sizzle while the egg cooked. Then I made myself a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich on french bread for breakfast.
It tasted luminous. The warmth of the food added to the (mild) spice of the bacon started at the middle of my tongue and radiated out to the tips of my toes.
That sandwich alone made giving up carbs worth it.
The buffet three hours later was very good as well… but, man, that sandwich.
I’ll start eating healthy again… next week, maybe.
It’s good that I’m back on carbs, though, because this weekend is NUTS. One of the counter-kids asked me to go to her school musical and I, like an idiot, said I’d go. So I’m going to be the 40ish year old guy at the high school musical (other kids who work at the diner said they’d sit with me, so I won’t be alone or anything, so it’s not THAT creepy… I hope). Friday night is going to be a small intimate game night with a core team of co-workers to celebrate some small victories and homecoming after being sent out to site for a week. Saturday is game night with the regular gaming group. And Sunday we have friends coming down from Denver to enjoy a meal with us.
And that’s just the social stuff! This is also the weekend that we need to move the winter stuff to the back of the closet and the summer stuff to the front! And the usual litany of chores and errands!
But when I went climbing on Tuesday, I found myself saying “I could go again… hey, I could go again… hey, I could go higher this time… hey, I could go again…” and I climbed more than twice the routes I did from the gym visit before just because I had so much gas in my tank.
As such, if I’m going to be doing stuff every day this weekend, I’m glad it’s the first weekend where I’m back on carbs.
So… what’s on your docket?

I have to go get emergency fitted for a black suit tomorrow.
Which should tell you how my vacation went.Report
Oof. I’m so sorry, Aaron. We’ll be thinking about you.Report

Waiting for Jay to come pick me up from the musical (at work). Working a 10 tomorrow, but I get to take my graduating seniors and student supervisors out to lunch and make them brainstorm about work things, one of my favorite end-of-year rituals.
Saturday is an end-of-year banquet that I’m attending with my officemate, where at least one of our students will be performing, so that should be pretty neat (last year’s was really meaningful and amazing).
Sunday, aforementioned Denver friends.
Also I hope there will be lots of sleeping. I slept 10 hours last night and my body was still yelling FEED ME SEYMOUR about the lack of sleep it thinks it needs this morning…Report
Ugh, this week was NOT a fun week. All my students are freaking out, I have a broken dishwasher and no ETA on the installation of the new one I bought, my mom was sick (and finally went to the doctor, and a good thing to, as it was a bacterial thing that could have gotten horrifically worse), and I found out someone is having to resign a responsibility they have and I am hoping it’s a time conflict and not health reasons…
I have would I *could* be doing this weekend (I always do), but except for writing a couple exams I need to give (maybe this afternoon), I am taking the weekend off because next week is stuff-hits-the-fan week – all the grading, and we are having at least two of our job applicants in for in person interviews. And I have to take my car in for a recall repair and hope I can find enough people willing to drive me (or saddle up and walk) until it’s done….so I think I need a restful weekend to prepare myself.Report
One thing about the musical which I thought was interesting is that they made a deal (not a *BIG* deal, but a deal) about how everyone in the audience was helping support live theater.
Which is not how I thought about school plays until the director made that a particular point in his introduction to the play.
I had always thought of a school play as a thing that you endured because you knew someone in it.Report
