I’d say “lobbyists” get a significant share of rhetorical abuse. If not for fearless social pioneers like Hillary “lobbyists are people, too” Clinton, I shudder to think what horrors we’d have subjected this beleaguered class to by now.
On a more serious note: my estimation of Sullivan took a major and irreparable nose-dive after the rather unimpressive way he handled not only Ryan’s “Path to Prosperity” but, more importantly, defending himself from critics on his left. But, at the same time, I never thought Andrew was the guy to go to for slow, reasoned and numerically-gifted analysis; so while I may read the Dish (considerably) less than I used to, I still think he’s unquestionably a net-positive for the blogosphere, and I admire his rather unguarded humanity as a writer. I think he’s wrong on many things for many reasons, but I also think that, from what I can glean by reading his work over the years, he’s basically got a good heart; and in politics that’s no small virtue.Report

Bawer sounds like LGF, circa 2005. For a guy who lives in Norway his contempt for Europe and 9/12 uber-patriotic mindset is baffling.
But the best way to damn him is to let him speak for himself: “European officials have a clear route out of this nightmare. They have armies. They have police. They have prisons. They’re in a position to deport planeloads of people everyday. They could start rescuing Europe tomorrow.”
He’s a creep.
