The past is another country.
Not even a “what part of town?”
But neither am I getting a “you know, if you quit going to speakeasies, this would stop happening to you” vibe.Report
In an allegorical sense, I can totally relate to this. No matter what big thing is going on in my life, my colleagues tend not to care. (And yet, I’m expected to care about certain things). It’s a very isolating feeling and yes you do wind up saying “Fine” (though perhaps in a tight-lipped way) when asked “how are you doing” because you know no one gives a fish and just wants to hear “fine”
(I had a parent in the hospital at the very start of classes this fall; it looked bad for a couple of days, and I was surprised at how little anyone seemed to care)Report
Totally. There is nothing that makes you feel so alone as realizing no one around you really cares that much. And I’m so sorry you had to deal with that when going through such a hard time. I’m glad they pulled through.Report
Yeah this is like being diagnosed with a chronic disease, LOL. No one cares. People don’t bother to ask how you’re doing and if you volunteer information they will immediately change the subject.
One time I was (briefly!) telling a family member about a really upsetting experience and they all but rolled their eyes, and then went on to tell me the entire life story of the guy who had hypnotized them to stop smoking (for the better part of an hour). Not anyone we knew, just a random hypnotist. The life story of a total stranger was apparently more important than something bad that happened to me. It was one of the oddest, most disenheartening experiences I’ve ever had.Report
