The Innovation Boom
Given the recent discussions about social dynamism and technological innovation around these parts, you may be interested in Scott Sumner’s take on the 20th century’s innovation boom. The scope of technological change at mid-century really puts our own “digital revolution” to shame.
It’s an interesting post on his part, although I think he heavily understates how important the Information and Computer Revolution has been in the past 30 years. Think of all the stuff that’s gone by the wayside – carbon paper, typewriters, a whole mass of “process” jobs, and so forth.
Or beyond that, look at what happened to the US military with the advent of “smart” weapons made possible with miniaturized electronics and new computer technology. It has drastically increased the effectiveness and accuracy of US military capabilities.Report
