2. the French word dénouement is derived from the Old French word desnouer, “to untie”

   Weird. I thought it came from “nuage,” or cloud. To “dénouer” would be to de-cloud something, as when the remaining unexplained parts of the plot were laid bare.Report

      1. And I’d never actually looked it up. I just figured it was obvious. But those “obvious” etymologies… they’re often wrong.Report

      2. I thought I remembered hearing it was from “knot” way back in a literature course in college, but I admit I hadn’t thought about it since.Report
