I own this record and I’m going to give it a spin today to see how my hearing compares to yours.

I think Farrar’s strength lies in his refusal to give up on his musical ideals, which you characterize as refusal to evolve. He stayed in St. Louis, while Tweedy moved to Chicago and disdains his past. Jeff’s a hell of a story teller, and a prince of a guy, but his music, on the whole, leaves me cold. I told my friend who’s a huge Wilco fan that I think they’re one of the best singles bands out there.

I saw Son Volt in concert a couple of years when they were touring this album, and it’s one of the best shows I ever saw. Farrar has absolutely no stage presence, so it was a packed 90 minute show. Normally, I’d feel ripped off by a show that short, but it was all music. His longest speaking stretch was the band introductions.

You’re right about Trace. Why Windfall wasn’t picked as the single is a complete mystery.

Honky Tonk is an overlooked gem in SV’s catalog.

For the record, Cairo is in IL, and KAYRO is the correct pronunciation.Report
