The past is another country.Report
Eh, you could replace this scene today with ‘cargo shorts or khakis’ instead of ‘work clothes or white tie’.Report
“You told me you weren’t going to wear slacks!”
“You told me that you weren’t going to wear a shirt that buttoned down all the way!”Report
I am having dinner with some of my former colleagues this evening. They’re still working; I am retired; they’ll be wearing business attire of some sort. I’m trying to decide if I should wear a gaudy Hawaiian shirt, or my formal one.
The shirt is one my sister gave me while she and her family were living in Hawaii. That’s how she described it: “Formal, suitable for serious weddings, but not funerals.” She offered to send me a set of formal swim trunks if I needed them.Report
Yeah when I think that business attire they’re talking about is suit and tie and that was considered “dressing down”?? Yee god(ess?)’s I am glad I live in this era.Report
The thing about suits though is that they’re really flattering, especially if you get them adjusted so they fit well.
I’ve never worn tails, but I wonder if it similar for them.Report
All this also made a lot more sense when the geographic center of population was somewhat further north.
Wearing a suit in DC, much less Atlanta, Houston, Charlotte, and anywhere in Florida, is not pleasant for almost half the year.Report
