Weekend!
So I’m sitting at home, listening to some sweeet tuneage, chatting with friends (that included Maribou), and, suddenly, BRRRREWWWN everything turns off. Lights, monitor, everything.
I’m irritated because, hey, I was in the middle of something. So I called Maribou up on the phone (she was at work) and said “please apologize for me, I’ve just lost power.” She told me “Hey, I’d love to, but we lost power here too. Now, if you’ll pardon me, I have to deal with the fact that we’ve just lost power.”
So we hung up and I figured, okay, the power should be back on by now.
And it wasn’t.
I heard a fire truck in the distance.
So I figured that I’d call a handful of friends… Dman wasn’t answering his phone, Elmgrows wasn’t answering his phone, Fish wasn’t answering his phone…
“Huh,” I thought. “It’s happening.”
I then called mom and she answered and I asked her “Hey, do you have power?” and she said “Oh, yeah! I’m using the computer right now! If you’ve lost power, do you need anything? Groceries? Do you need to spend the night over here?”
“Ma, Ma, Ma. I’m just checking to see if you had power or if it was time to panic. We’re good.”
So I called Maribou and told her that it was not, in fact, happening and she said that she already knew that. There was a car accident that knocked over something or other.
Whew! So I said that I’d think about going to bed because, seriously, all of my entertainments require electricity (even the books require a flashlight) so I figured I’d just go to bed.
And apologize to the folks I was chatting with as soon as I got internet back.
Lying in bed, petting the kitties who were wondering why the bald one was in bed so early, I sighed and prepared to drift off when, one hour later, the power turned back on.
Hurray!
But, apparently, we didn’t have internet. Just power.
So it wasn’t until more or less right now that I was able to write this and just be pleased that, this weekend, I can spend it doing chores instead of trying to find ammo.
So… what’s on your docket?

FWIW, my “yeah, it’s not the rapture, honey” cracked up my student worker.
Aside from having heard about the source of the outage, we also knew that only 1/2 the buildings on campus lost power. Our grid is so… not gridlike.
In not unrelated news, I am super-ready for the weekend. Deck building and all.Report
Without getting into religion, any suspicions I may or may not have had about it being the rapture were silenced by my mom picking up the phone.Report
@jaybird I figured, that’s why I said it.Report
While I was not, in fact, raptured, I was having a rapturous time seeing Garbage in concert in Denver when you called.Report
I missed them when they came through Houston. 🙁Report
Nothing for me, other than trying to wrap up the seeming millions of shop projects I have going, and starting to pack. Maybe an art show with my cousin in Napa.
But I have a cold, and that is what is slowing everything down right now.Report
Going to go into the city for some local color and then see a my friends play. She’s acting so it won’t be as good as if she’d just be direction/producing (Zing!)
Probably drop a few hints to the GF on ideas for my birthday. Sadly I don’t think she’ll spring for a bottle of Pappy’s or 30 year old Mccallan. 🙂Report
I am going to be sleeping as two of the big projects riding on my back are now finished. Oh, there’s always stuff – I have grading this afternoon – but at least there isn’t a drop-dead-deadline staring me in the face for a little while.
I also need to get to a grocery store better than the crappy local wal-mart, so I guess I’ve got that hour-and-a-half drive in my future this weekend.Report
Fledermaus and Mr T are going to see Dolly Parton tomorrow. Hopefully, anyway, as long as I didn’t mess things up and get scammed too badly. I realized only after paying that I was dealing not with a legit ticket outlet, but with a dodgy ticket scalping outlet. So we have an electronic ticket, but less than full confidence that it will work.
There are two parties I might go to that evening – a house party, and a roving bike party.
Beyond that, the continuing renovations continueReport
Dolly Parton!!!! Hope it works.Report
It did. Thanks!Report
I’m continuing to try to buy a laptop. For a company that sells laptops, they seem strangely unwilling to sell me one. Cancelling an order with no notice (or reason), re-entering the order then having it disappear, and now sending me in circles where I dare not buy a laptop from someone else lest I end up with TWO laptops.
And always asking me for an order number I don’t have, because it was never sent to me (for the second try at ordering it), possibly because the order was never completed because their billing department seems to have set all their servers on fire.
I figure it’ll take me all weekend, really, to either get the stupid thing OR make sure it’s so firmly cancelled I don’t get a surprise laptop later.Report
I’m on similar endevour that’s not going well either. Are you by any chance dealing with the Chinese people that bought what used to be International Big Machines?Report
No, I’m dealing with Dell, whom I’ve never had a real problem with before (as long as you avoid their lowest end machines, which is frankly advice for pretty much anyone), but right now seem bound in determined to keep my order in limbo, blame “technical problems” and claim everything will eventually sort itself out.
The XPS laptop line looks quite nice, assuming I ever get it.Report
Dell was my first guess, because I had the same issue with them. I wound up having to wait an hour on hold for an actual salesperson, and them dictate to him everything I’d already entered into their web site. Some parts of it three and four times, because the idea that I was paying for it but it was being delivered to a person with a different name and address was somehow a challenging one.Report
Running a fencing tournament on Saturday. Finishing an electricity-in-the-West post. The rest of the time goes into the deck reconstruction.Report
Is Mexico going to pay for it?Report
As no one showed up with mysterious amounts of cash, presumably not. It’s a fun format. Everyone seemed to be smiling a lot, which is what I look for. A wide range of experience in the field this year — from a 12-year-old fencing in her first tournament to a former Olympian.Report
I have about 6 bicycle racks that need to be brazed together, and if it’s not raining (“raining”, Oregon-style, I can deal with, but the rainy season has been creeping towards actual downpours) and the tickle in my throat is just allergies and not a cold I’m about a month overdue for a nice 200km ride up into the mountains.Report
My not-so-eventful weekend:
1. Watched Green Room – liked it.
2. Took my youngest to buy a pair of new shoes. As my youngest is on the spectrum, I really enjoy doing stuff like that with him. It gets him to interact with people in different situations, which is always a good thing. He got this pair with bright yellow laces and says he can’t stop running when he wears them.
3. Watched my oldest play Overwatch with two of his friends and clean house.
4. Late night lifting. I love the gym on weekends. No one is there.Report
