Weekend Plans Post: Flurries of Activity
I know that to extroverts, hearing introverts complain about doing things with friends probably sounds like crazy talk.
“Oh, so you’re going to be doing things you like doing, with people you enjoy spending time with? Bummer.”
But when you are going to be doing things you like doing with people you enjoy spending time with precious few breaks for recharge time, it becomes overstimulating. Like, the main thing you want to do is just go into the basement and tell the kiddos to boot up the N64 and put Mario Party 2 on there and teach the finer points of how you used to do it old school. But, no. You have to stay with the grownups.
Anyway, this weekend we are going to be spending evenings with dear friends and playing stuff like One Night Werewolf and Cards Against Humanity with them and their family that happens to be in town. While Maribou is working late on Friday, I’m going to drop off the car for her at work and walk home and, while walking home, walk past a lovely little college diner that makes a nice Rueben. And, of course, all of the usual chores and errands that one requires to finish up so that one can make it to the next weekend.
But, jeez louise, we’ve been doing wonderful things with people I enjoy spending time with for weeks and weeks and weeks. It results in me not having gas in my car and doing stuff like staying up about an hour after I ought to have gone to bed even on a school night.
So… what’s on your docket?

I am sitting in a hotel room in Seattle, debating when I should make my first call, and who it should be with. Missing my wife.Report

Tonight there’s an ecstatic dance thing.
The play I thought I’d missed the chance to get tickets for last weekend, turns out it had a longer run than I realized (or maybe got held over?) so I did get tickets and we’re going tomorrow.Report
I have family up for my birthday, which should be fun, but it may interfere with my plan to do nothing but play the new Resident Evil 2 until I lose consciousness due to sheer exhaustion.Report
When is your birthday? Mine was Wednesday, turned 48.Report
Next Tuesday. 41.
And happy birthday BTW.Report
Happy approximately your birthday to both of you!Report

An informal-ish work thing from 9-4 tomorrow (real work, but at a colleague’s house and focused on our department issues). So that kind of blows the weekend. My wife has some netflixing planned, and we’ll probably do some of that Saturday night–we just started The Americans (which is actually on Amazon prime). Not fully sold on it yet (3 or 4 episodes in).Report
Tomorrow, my family is getting together with another family to cook and eat and play games. They were former neighbors with two kids about the same age as our two, and we were close but haven’t seen them in a while.
A few days ago, the 22 year-old younger brother of the husband shot and killed himself. So we are going over to try to distract and be of some comfort (invited, not imposing ourselves).
Beyond that, laundry and various housekeep chores, as always.Report
I have my blue belt test and nerdfest (D&D). I’m hoping the DM’s wife makes something like green curry, as was promised last time before the meet had to be cancelled due to snow.Report
Good luck on the test.Report
I dunno. I know what I SHOULD do (a bunch of research reading). Not sure I have the energy. I SHOULD also run out and do “big shopping” in the next city over but I also kind of don’t want to, but next weekend will be worse, because it will be right after payday for almost everyone, and the stores are horrific on payday Saturday.
What do I want to do? I don’t know. I think I’m just tired. Why do “short weeks” seem longer than regular weeks?
I’m also bummed out because of some local bad news (a couple people I care about had relatives die this week), and also because I realized today that to go and do any “fun” thing for my 50th birthday the end of February, I will either have to do it two weeks early or two weeks late because of different commitments and because a day we were SUPPOSED to have classes cancelled for testing (which they have always done every year for the nearly 20 years I’ve taught), they decided to UNCANCEL this year, and they didn’t tell us until two weeks after classes started….so it’s in all of our syllabi and it’s going to be a clusterfish because we’ll have to tell students “No, really, you have to be here, and don’t make plans to work extra hours that day but if you are one of the people taking the test you get an excused absence” and it just makes my head hurt to contemplate.
A lot of times the People In The Offices seem to be unaware of what it is actually like for those of us in the classroom.Report
A friend of mine manages programmers for a university IT department. Part of the reason he is good at his job is due to (like me) being a faculty brat, so he has a good idea of the workings of the professoriate. But he told me once that the hardest thing was letting his workers know that what they often proposed ran counter to the mission of that university. Indeed, to the mission of education in general.Report
I feel like I’m finally settling into a routine that I like and can sustain for the first time in … months? years? (I’ve been socializing a little less than Jay has, so I’m not as out of gas as he is… plus I had more time off around the holidays by a long shot).
The friends we’re visiting with on Saturday were trying to decide between 2 twin puppies and went with “both”. Apparently this is having a salutary effect (so far) on the 2 year old dog, who is quite interested in looking after them… we’ll see if they keep settling her down once they’re old enough to wrassle properly :D.
Anyway, I’m super excited at the idea of having a LAPFUL OF PUPPEHS this time tomorrow night 🙂
Sunday we’ll be mostly recuperating, II reckon. The next two weeks of work look to be shaping up more stressfully than the previous two… sometimes I like to pre-recuperate.Report
Prolly be doing chores, plantin’ stuff, an shootin at quarters.Report
