The Weekend Plans Post: Thanksgiving (American)
Thanksgiving is ideally a day of family and feasting and maybe falling asleep on the futon while football flows from the functioning photobox.
I hope that you’ve got a good day planned, whether it’s spent with others or alone, whether it’ll be spent feasting or fasting, whether you watch football or pro wrestling or decide instead to watch a marathon of Friends on Netflix… or maybe just the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
For our part, we’re going over to the sister’s husband’s mother’s for dinner. They told me that I’m not in charge of dessert this year and, instead, I’m in charge of the cheese plate. So I got 4 different kinds of soft cheese, 3 kinds of medium hardness cheese, some gimungous grapes, some blackberries the size of your thumb, five kinds of crackers, and fig jelly.
We’ll bug the nephews by dabbing and using “modern” kids’ lingo, have a good (politics-free!) conversation with the rest of the family, do the yearly family photo thing, and then try to beg off a hair early and get home and burrow deep into the basement. And then, ideally, do nothing until we escape, bleary-eyed, on Monday. (Maybe have a gaming night with friends or something low-key like that but nothing so exciting as “going to Costco” or something like that.)
So… what’s on your docket?

Let me brag a little. I’ll be part of the officiating crew working the highest level football championship in my state Saturday evening.
Also, Thanksgiving dinner at a Wisconsin supper club. Other than that, pure laziness.Report
Congratulations!
(I hope only 3 or 4 people make jokes about eyesight and/or the game between the Seahawks vs. the Packers.)Report
Reading and sleeping.
I started things off right today by sleeping from 8pm last night until 8:30 this morning, then from noon-3:30 this afternoon.
So good.Report
Harvested a deer on Monday, butchered on Tuesday…prepping loins for Thanksgiving.
Today harvested 2 ducks we raised and just finished rendering about 1/2 cup pure golden duck fat. So excited…maybe too excited.
Planning to saute the livers in the fat as a side to the grilled Breasts and Venison Loin… which we’ll sauce with a fermented cherry and cranberry chutney.
Trying new sous vide technique to confit the thighs…about 30 more hours to go. Will start duck pancetta tomorrow.
Looking forward to pairing with my favorite wine, Chateau Musar from Lebanon…probably my last bottle of the 2002.
Love harvest season.
College Senior daughter is bopping around Quebec, but college sophomore son is home. 4 yr old is still 4. All the in-betweens still betwixt. Just us for dinner. Will watch the Bears and talk religion and politics all day because we can.Report
I’m nothing but envious.Report
Many New Zealand shops have started offering Black Friday sales.
Also, it will be 2 weeks until the next big expansion for my favourite game will be released.
These two facts combined may have resulted in me buying a giant Lego rocket.Report
Two words: Grey. Cup.

Heading to a cabin on the side of Mt. Hood, just the wife and I for two days, then a couple we share times like this are coming up.
Nothing planned, except maybe cold cuts and beer/wine.
Glorious lack of stress. Oh, and I even talked the wife into bringing real books.Report
