There’s a wicked smart woman I support that doesn’t use words to communicate and has limited use of her body. She can, however, point to things, read and write. So she has a letter board that she can sluggishly tell us what is on her mind. Today she used a speech generating device that has word prediction. I was working on my computer with my back to her for about two minutes. In that time, she was able to construct two sentences to tell me what she wanted. Then she called me a bitch. 🙂 Space awesome!!!Report

It strikes me that you and I both work with and in service of folks that society tends to underestimate… Even sometimes ourselves. As such, we often have amazing moments wherein either they surpass even our own expectations OR we get to share with the world the trueness of their self-worth.Report

Agreed, but I’ve been doing this since just after high school, so it kind blows my mind that people don’t know the people I support are so diverse. This is my world. I forget that people don’t live in my world.Report

Your students may be less irrational than you think.

    1. It is fully possible it is possible to not have any single favourite colour and at the same time have a second favourite colour. After all, if you rank your colour preferences and two colours tie for first place while only one colour occupies second place, you don’t actually have a favourite colour. But you do have a second favourite colour.

    2. Its not clear that anything Shawn says contradicts Chris’s research on memory. After all, we commonly remember things that we have previously forgotten. (Forgetting is not like passing a magnet over your hard disk. Its more like losing a part of your file allocation tables)

    3. Well, it’s not like having silent work time caused it to be Kevin’s birthday, or that his birthday and silent work time share a common cause. If we can establish correlation, and we eliminate the other two options, the only reasonable option left is that it is silent work day because it is Kevin’s birthday.

To be pedantic, his mistake is one that is fairly common on the internet: to infer a pattern from one case.Report

This past week, while at a resort (on vacation), Bug (who just turned 3) leaned back in his chair, patted his swollen belly, and proclaimed, “I think I may have eaten too much.”Report

One of the things I love about my job are the things that AREN’T really my job. Helping a student figure out their I9 and W4; being the only place open at 9:30 pm for a random community member to use a computer to submit a job app, etc. The kinds of help that I don’t just take for granted as part of what I do.

But the really best part is just working with college students all day. Like preK kids, they never cease to say astounding, wonderful, and challenging things :D.Report
