Since I can’t seem to stop talking about controversial topics today…
Abuses in a J-1 student visa program. The exploitative nature of much of what passes for various types of visas and the quasi-indenture system connected to them makes me quite angry sometimes.
This is one of those times when I have head-explody thoughts.Report

We were the host family for a high school student, who was on a J1 student visa, through an agency.
We were lucky: Our experience went really well, for both the student and our family.
However, the overall program was so out of control / mismanaged, and open to abuse, I was really astonished. There were such minimal checks and reviews that I can see how really bad situations could very easily happen, with potential victims on either side of the relationship.
But, I’m still glad we did it, and opened our home to a great kid, who got an interesting introduction to America. It’s a shame that stories like this will shut down the good potentials.Report
Say it ain’t so! Our immigration system is corrupt and inefficient?Report
