Caught in the Middle
The effort to repeal the law barring gay men and lesbians from serving openly in the U.S. military is nearing a chaotic endgame involving fast-moving courts, a slow-moving military, a lame-duck Congress and an administration increasingly caught in the middle.
“Caught in the middle” is a pretty sad description for either the Commander in Chief or a “fierce advocate” for gay and lesbian equality. Both imply leadership, don’t they?
Obama is no friend to GLBT people. Sure, he makes nice noises to them when they’re in the room but he knows that they’ll never vote for any Republican in any significant way. Indeed, a great many Republicans have collaborated with the Democrats to create this arrangement. As a result, there is no need for Obama or any other Democrat to actually do anything substantive to appeal to GLBT voters for their support, loyalty, or money. They’ve got nowhere else to go.Report
Lawyer pretty much summed it up. Gays can’t vote republican, it requires a very high level of masochism of nose holding, but they can be apathetic about donations and volonteer time.Report
