it would be apoplexy….
… from Mac fans if this or this had been the doing of Microsoft or Steve Ballmer. But it was Apple and Steve Jobs, so it’ll be stony silence, or yet more hero worship, fanboy-ishness, equivocation, and abandonment of discretion and the critical capacity.
Update: Yes, yes, yes.

Apple has always been the more closed off company, but they’ve done increasingly well by providing superior products.
They only allow their operating system to run on Apple branded hardware (which is sold at a much higher profit margin than identical hardware sold from other manufacturers). iPods and iPhones are tied to one computer and have to be synced with iTunes. They are intensely secretive about their product upgrade timetables, so consumers can’t plan their purchases. But they are rewarded by consumers because their products are more stable, easier to use and stylish.
I can tell you that I’ve lost a lot of respect for Apple as a company with their handling of the iPhone App Store in particular. It’s not a dealbreaker yet, but I hope the pressure mounts on Apple, forcing them to become a friendlier company.Report
