Weekend!

Maribou

Maribou is a voracious reader who also likes to watch, stare at, and listen to stuff. Occasionally he makes stuff, too. They work in a small liberal arts college library, and share a house in Colorado with their husband Jaybird, three cats, and what looms ever closer to ten thousand books. Hey, I think we got what you got! Lain got sick about three days ago. It’s spread to Clancy and myself. Nothing too dreadful, but my ears could use a good poppin’. Throat not so good.Report

  2. I am not going to be flying home tomorrow as expected, because the snowpocalypse is expected to make the roads between where I am and the airpot impassible. Instead, I’ll stay in NC over the weekend and fly home Monday.

And thank you, Mr. Zeko, Cookout is indeed awesome, and there’s one walking distance from my hotel. (To the extent that anything is walking distance when it’s 25 degrees out.)Report

Ugh, sucks. Hope you feel better soon. I would send some of my homemade chicken soup, but it’d only make you feel worse.

Here it’s cedar fever time (commonly overheard: “I’ve got the cedar”), which makes pretty much everyone miserable simultaneously.Report

    SNOWAPOCALYPSE!!!!!!!!!

THE ENTIRE MID ATLANTIC IS IN FULL PANIC MODE

I’m making soup, working from home, and playing crappy old video games while my new rig is being “tweaked” for maximum windows 10 removal. 🙂 Yeah, I got “peeps” to hook me up.Report

        It does.
I consulted my IT professional and she said that mandatory updates are pushed down by MS and you CANNOT turn it off. MS broke one of her other MS programs by pushing a windows 10 OS update onto her machine. She spent 6 hours on the phone with tech support. They could provide no help. Finally she blew it up and installed Windows 7.

        Also, it’s a major privacy invader.Report

        • Kim in reply to Damon says:

No, you can’t turn it off, but in windows 7, you can set it to download what you want when you want it. She may have gotten the home version, in which case I’m sure you’re screwed.Report

          • Damon in reply to Kim says:

I’m not sure what version of windows 10 she had on her pc, but whichever one it was, broke some other MS program she had installed. So after a while, she just reformatted the HD and installed 7.

She recommended that I use 7 or 8 and offered to remove 10 if I got a machine with it on.Report

I run 7 Ultimate and 7 Pro on my machines at home. Works like a champ. I did install 10 on my oldest’s laptop and then spent much time researching how to turn off all the crud. Seems to run pretty well after all of that.

Generally, my OS update policy with Windows is that I’ll update when a game I want to play doesn’t run on my current OS.Report

Yes, she’s installing 7 pro this weekend for me and some other software, and a bunch of drivers.

When I get it back I’ll have to configure it and install the balance of the sw and transfer the HD data, but I should be up and running by next weekend.

While all of the other suckers were at the grocery fighting over the last dozen eggs and gallon of milk, I was raiding the meat aisle. We have chicken & dumplings, pot roast and other hearty foods on the menu this weekend while we hunker down under all of the snow.

Working from home today and watching the snow fall. Started about 9:30 and the street is already covered. Beautiful out there. Should be fun.

Tomorrow will be a great day for chores around the house. The youngest daughter (17) has made a plea to venture out for snow sledding. TBD if we can get out of the neighborhood.Report

I made some chicken and dumplings from a box kit in my slow cooker not very long ago. I got rave reviews from my wife and friends who ate it. The yield was something like sixteen meals spread out between six people over four days, and every time I had it, it always seemed to taste good. The worst I can say is that it was kind of salty — I think adding some more fresh vegetables like celery and carrots would have helped with that (and stretched it out even farther.) For those of y’all who, like @maribou , are feeling a bit under the weather and looking for comfort food that doesn’t take a lot of work and keeps you out of the kitchen, this may be a good way to go. Make the dumplings smaller than the instructions in the kit recommend.Report

Last weekend it was transplanting a dozen or so nopals from near the house to out on a fence line. This made room for the spekboom that are quickly outgrowing containers and need to go into the ground.

The last of season round kumquats have ripened enough to start being harvested. These trees really need to be renamed, maybe something like ‘die hard little oranges’.

Looking back, the tomatoes did poorly last summer, too much sun early on wiped out 80%. Those few that survived revealed a location that provides enough shade to avoid becoming victims of the sun. The plan is to work a 3’x9′ plot and start the seedlings early.Report

Nopal: a common name in Mexican Spanish for Opuntia cacti (commonly referred to in English as prickly pear), as well as for its pads.

Spekboom: Portulacaria afra (known as elephant bush, dwarf jade plant, porkbush and spekboom in Afrikaans) is a small-leaved succulent plant found in South Africa.

      I know what kumquats are.Report

Too much sun in the garden – that’s a problem I can understand, theoretically, might exist…

We have a beautiful, probably 60 or 70 year old elm overhanging the house and garden. It means we are usually comfortable in summer though the house has no A/C, but also that our garden is so-so at best (my own lazy gardening habits contribute to that as well).Report

Busy Saturday. I’m going to be on the move from about 7:00 AM until 2:00 or 3:00 AM.

But I’ll finally see the new Star Wars movie in there in the middle. Taking my grandfather. Not sure he’s really into Star Wars, but it’s more likely than anything else out, and, well…given the loss of his wife, we’ve been making sure he spends plenty of time with family, or out and about.

After that, a party I’m not all that thrilled to attend that will include people I don’t want to see, crowded parking in a neighborhood that makes me cringe thinking of unattended cars, and general “blah”. But my wife wants to go. 🙂Report
