I’ve got to give Joe Buck credit – that’s just about a perfect call. Echo the call of the Thomson home run, and leave it at that and let the moment speak for itself. It’s got to be harder to be restrained than to be exuberant, and IMO Buck nailed it.Report
People hate on Buck for whatever reason. I think he’s clearly one of the very best national baseball guys. He adds a lot of enjoyment to my fall baseball experience. On football, I feel like we’re hearing him earn his paycheck.
I’m also a big fan of Harold Reynolds as a studio analyst. I think he’ll be good in the booth, but he doesn’t really have the rhythms down yet. I actually thought to myself when I heard Mccarver was retiring that it should be Reynolds, but now I miss him as a postgame analyst. Verducci is pretty much a disaster. Buck’s working with an as-yet less-than-great broadcast team; he manages to still be very good. He’s a great baseball announcer.Report
I didn’t mean to be disparaging towards Buck – I actually agree that he’s a fine baseball announcer and surprisingly good as a double threat on gridiron play by play (kind of the anti-Gus Johnson, who I never really liked at his primary job and is terrible doing any other sport).
Part and parcel of that is my admiration that he didn’t inject himself into the moment – how great must that temptation be, especially one as historically resonant as that? How many national announcers could have resisted?Report
No, I didn’t take it that way. I was just using your comment as a jump-off.
It sounds like we share tastes in sportscasting. I don’t have a deep anti-Gus Johnson inclination, but he’s comically over-adored. Even granting that the excitement is the appeal and not so much knowledge or understanding, he’s… fine. Others do enthusiasm just as well. Others who aren’t particularly extraordinary sportscasters.Report
Joe Buck is the worst.Report
No, he’s really not. It’s a classic urban legend.Report
Thought of you after that one last night, MIke.
Man, did Ishikawa crush that.Report
Nice to see you, Mike!
Go… [checks] Royals!Report
Good Lord. I’m trying to watch tonight’s game. By my estimate, in a half-inning, they are averaging longer per pitch than the NBA allows for moving the ball the length of the court and shooting, and damned near as long as the NCAA allows per play for college football. Batters aren’t even asking for time, they’re just wandering out of the box and assuming that it will be granted. I used to love baseball, and I’m bored to tears.Report
