  1. JB – when you say it can’t be outsourced, why is that? Is it because there are bits related to the physical plant (physical access control), or are there legal regime/compliance reasons(you have to know local law, and be subject to it) that outsourcing is impossible/unlikely?Report

    1. It’s a mixture of all sorts of things. Part of it is the relationship to the physical plant, part of it has to deal with the relationship to the physical data, and part of it is the fact that there are a non-zero number of applications out there that do little things like “phone home”… where “home” is a non-US country.

Now, of course, I was told in the 90’s that unix administration wouldn’t be outsourced because of limitations due to such things as internet speeds, etc, so I may have my head up my butt a seventeenth time here but there are certain services that require not only a warm body (check!) but a trust relationship that outsourcing makes blurry.

You’ve heard of the spills on the front page that are related to national security… I’m waiting to hear about a spill related to a multi-national global conglomerate where all kinds of dirty laundry will come out. Once that happens (“Did you know that the CEO has these very interesting hobbies?”), we’ll see one heck of a backlash.

Of course, I see it as a “when” rather than an “if” so that colors my take on it somewhat.Report

    1. I watched the first couple episodes of Suits last weekend, and enjoyed them.

This weekend I’ve watched a lot of stuff about asteroids (though the not-threatening-to-hit-Earth kind this time, thankfully) and plate tectonics. With a five year old who gives me play-by-play, because he’s seen each of these shows ten times.Report

  2. Well, thanks to the Netflix trial, I have recently watched Orange is the New Black (NEED. MORE. EPISODES), caught up on the last few seasons of How I Met Your Mother and Sister Wives, and added about 800 things to my queue, none of which I really have time to watch because of school. :/

I’ve been reading photo books and art books and Marillier’s Shadowfell and Rowell’s Attachments. All fun, nothing too intense.Report

    1. I watched the first ep of Orange and really liked it. I keep trying to get my wife to watch it so we can watch the rest together, but she hasn’t had time. I may just go ahead without her soon.

Glad to see Donna back on air.Report

  3. Watched a Seahawk win vs. Vikings ( I think there’s something wrong w/ me…I’m following an NFL franchise…) Caught up on a couple S. 1 episodes of “Big Bang Theory”, the new “Walking Dead” & its after-show.

Reading has been back-burner of late, but introduced my 16 y.o. daughter to Frank Lloyd Wright’s architecture, which captivates her, and she has labelled it “house-porn”.Report

  4. I am about halfway through season 3 of The Wire.

For reading, I am ~2/3 of the way through Book 5 of The Wheel of Time. I am also on Book 10 of Lucifer, so I will wrapping that up shortly.Report
