  1. Unfortunately, I was at the Cards/Cubs game Wednesday where the little bears clinched a post-season spot (though thankfully not the division). Your conclusions are just and fair.Report

    1. As a White Sox fan, I feel your pain. Cubs fans are becoming almost as insufferable as Cards fans, despite the fact that at least St. Louis fans have something to be insufferable about, i.e., the 2nd most World Series wins in MLB history.Report

  2. Thanks, I’ve prepared for a few years of winter; I guess the question will be whether the Cubs can develop a long-term approach. They’ve got good management, but tanking a team, trading anything not nailed down for prospects, and hoarding assets for the big push is not as difficult as finding a sustainable path. Worst of luck with that.Report

    1. That is indeed a good story (and an example of smart corporate marketing). I am reminded of the time, back in the day, that Burma Shave had one of those series of signs, saying “Free! Free!/A trip to Mars/For just ten thousand empty jars.” It was a toss-off line, but some guy did it. The Burma Shave people were thrown into a tizzy until they discovered a small town in Germany named “Mars” or something close. So they sent the guy over there first class, and the village made an occasion of it whooping it up, and a good time was had by all. (Or so Burma Shave told the story. I have no reason to doubt it, but maybe the guy had a lousy trip.)Report

  3. As a lifelong Cubs fan, this season is hard not to get excited about…but i’m trying to not lose my mind. Pretty excited about the opportunity, but we still have a long way to go.Report

  4. The Cubs are probably going to have the top record in baseball this year. Over that last 10 years, that top team:

    * Lost the division series 5 times
    * Lost the championship series twice
    * Won the World Series 3 timesReport
