Weekend!
Having put my beloved on a plane, I see the weekend yawn before me and I think “Man. I’m totally not going to do *ANYTHING*.”
I mean, I might order a pizza one night. I might do a marathon of House Season 2 on Saturday.
But, really? I plan on wasting the heck out of this weekend.
So… what’s on your docket?
Well, I’m finishing the second week of my new job, which is the first actually working in Cambridge with my new team. On the whole I’m really pretty overwhelmed (in a good way), so I’ll probably study work-stuff all weekend. It’s really fun, cool, and amazing.
My boss already assigned me a couple tickets. My goal is to finish both next week and really impress them. (They say it’s usually six months before a new engineer really figures out their system. I plan to blow their minds — with my mad veronica powers.)

Woo hoo!

So many author events! So many social gatherings! A couple of work-related panels! MANY FOODS AND DRINKS. And all at the leisurely pace I’ve set for myself so far, wherein it takes, for example, two full hours to unpack and shower and dress for dinner.Report
Bar crawled for more than 5 hours with my former-student-worker-now-friend. His first such experience. He really enjoyed it and will never ever ever ever do such a thing again, he says. I could’ve hit another 2 or 3 bars (yay, oxygen advantage).Report
… oxygen advantage?Report
When people who are used to sea level come to Colorado Springs, they react to a beer or glass of wine as if they had a couple of ounces more than they actually did. Contrariwise, when we go down to sea level (or Las Vegas), we find that our first cocktail may as well not have happened.
Altitude, baby.Report
@kim that’s being acclimated to the high altitude — you have an advantage of low landers both up high and down closer to sea level.Report
A while ago, I got a new camera. Used it a bit, and then it turned winter, and it got put away for some unknown reason. I got it out a few days ago, determined to really learn how to use it.
And discovered it has the most amazing macro capabilities ever. Like I’ve totally been spying on the secret lives of flowers. Sometimes, teeny, tiny flowers. I’ve been taking pictures for a long, long time. I had shows in Boston on Newbury Street, had hundreds of photo-journalism pics published. And through all those years, I’ve tried to get into the flowers’ inner core; but things never quite worked out that way.
So for the last few days, I’ve turned my head totally visual, taken thosands of photos (ohh, I’m so glad I don’t have to pay to have them developed!). The most gratifying thing is that twist of the brain that happens when you start using it intensively in a different way. Makes you feel younger.Report
Pics! We’re waiting for your photo essays! I’ll totally sponsor that guest post.Report
I can do that.
Let me get some coffee first.Report

Zic–those are beautiful!Report
They really are! @zic, I hope you don’t mind, but I am going to use one for one of my rotating desktop background pics (the one with the water lily). I promise to tell everyone who sees it and asks that it was taken by you :).Report
Please check your e-mail, @zicReport

We finally read the contract and found out how much her employer intends to pay her and how much they expect her to work in return for this payment.
The news was remarkably good. House hunting will now cease to be theoretical.Report

Awesomesauce! It’s been a long time coming and here’s hoping its a buyer’s market in your part of the world!Report
Great to hear that. I hope this all works out well for the three of you.Report

Decompression from being too busy in the last 10 days.
Kitty’s in Albuquerque for a reunion, Sister and Nephew and old college roomie and current gaming buddy are coming over tomorrow for Arkham Horror. Saturday we have an old blogging buddy from Australia dropping by for a bit, there will probably be more gaming. Sunday I’m recaulking the bathtub in the main bathroom and maybe working on the Jobs post, but more likely watching a couple of B5 episodes so that I can get that wagon back on the road.
I don’t like PHP.Report
We’re having a belated birthday party for The Russian tonight, which means cooking and cleaning today.
Not so sure about the weekend, except for a couple of yoga classes. Perhaps I’ll finish painting the den and catch up on some reading. It’s supposed to be stormy most of tomorrow.Report
Going to a party for people I used to work with mumblety-mumble years ago. It’s the anniversary of the place being taken over by Computer Associates and the all-hands meeting where their flunky announced that anyone not planning to stay should go across the street to get their severance check, and the room literally emptied.Report
This evening, a friend’s hooray-I-graduated potluck. Tomorrow, a kid birthday party in the afternoon. Might invite someone for supper, or I might just order pizza and watch a movie.
Sunday, for the first time in over a month, I get to get my hands greasy tinkering with bikes. I’m probably looking forward to that the most of the whole list.Report
Tonight and tomorrow I am going to try to spend as many waking moments with my wife as possible. We’re getting ready to have a two-week involuntary separation when her fun-trip overlaps with my work-trip. Hoping facetime on the tablets makes it slightly more tolerable. I think we’re going to try to catch a movie, have a good dinner out and maybe hit the pool.
On Sunday I am helping my brother pour concrete for most of the day to finish out a project for our mom. Should be sweaty and unpleasant but being a good son takes hard work sometimes.Report
In other news! My wife just got the “Preceptor (instructor) of the Year” award at the residency graduation banquet!Report
