Weekend!

Jaybird

Jaybird is Birdmojo on Xbox Live and Jaybirdmojo on Playstation's network. He's been playing consoles since the Atari 2600 and it was Zork that taught him how to touch-type. If you've got a song for Wednesday, a commercial for Saturday, a recommendation for Tuesday, an essay for Monday, or, heck, just a handful a questions, fire off an email to AskJaybird-at-gmail.com

No teenager this weekend, so we’re going to do our best not to be deafened tomorrow night (MBV, who Glyph tells me can be somewhat loud), going to a pool party Saturday, and Sunday brunch with a couple friends from grad school who are getting in town late Saturday. All grown ups weekend for the first time in, like, forever.Report

Calling MBV live “somewhat loud” is like calling the surface of the sun “somewhat warm”. For anyone unfamiliar with them:

My Bloody Valentine is a plutonium rock band from the Gagrakacka Mind Zones and is generally regarded as not only the loudest rock band in the Galaxy, but also as being the loudest noise of any kind at all. Regular concert goers judge that the best sound balance is usually to be heard from within large concrete bunkers some thirty-seven miles away from the stage, whilst the musicians themselves play their instruments by remote control from within a heavily insulated spaceship which stays in orbit around the planet – or more frequently around a completely different planet.

Their songs are on the whole very simple and mostly follow the familiar theme of boy-being meets girl-being beneath silvery moon, which then explodes for no adequately explored reason.

Many worlds have now banned their act altogether, sometimes for artistic reasons, but most commonly because the band’s public address system contravenes local strategic arms limitations treaties.

        1) I love HHGTTG.

        2) Until this year, Ministry was the loudest thing I’d ever heard. Then I went to a dubstep show, with speakers that took up half the club floor, and a sound that made me think I was either having a heart attack, my lungs were collapsing, or I had just been shot with some sort of sound canon. If it is louder than that — this was so loud that I was yelling to my girlfriend and I couldn’t tell if I was making a sound… at all; it was like nothing was coming out, and you usually hear yourself from the friggin’ inside, but this sound was vibrating my very bones to such an extent that my voice had no chance — then we’re going to need bigger earplugs.Report

      • Glyph in reply to Glyph says:

I’ve seen Ministry twice, and they are loud. I saw Grooverider in a London club (dark drum & bass, a dubstep forerunner) and it was loud. I’ve seen Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr. (multiple times), and the Jesus and Mary Chain – none of them mess about, when it comes to sheer volume.

MBV is in another class entirely, not even close. You may want to try wrapping your entire body in bubble-wrap, with a snorkel for air.Report

I wil be walking in a 5K tomorrow that also involves having “flavor powder” thrown on the runners by “flavor fairies.” My company has a flavor and fragrance division, and I decided to support them. It is the sort of thing I would not normally do, and I consider it good to do things that I would not normally do on occasion.

Other than that, no big plans.Report
