    Which hotel in Vegas? Though I haven’t been since 2002, I imagine that Vegas is designed to keep people out of their rooms and at restaurants, pools, and casinos, and shopping.

    East Coast hotels might be used to more business travelers.

    I do alumni interviews for my undergrad and have one scheduled for today and one for tomorrow.

    Something is going on Sunday, some kind of game…..Report

    So stupid question, asked because if I don’t ask, I’m like going to lose sleep over the weekend. And if I lose sleep, it should be in Vegas or looking for outlets, not over stupid questions:

    Is there a word for the phenomena of a symbol growing to represent something? I’m thinking of the process; like the way GMO has come to mean a host of things wrong with the food supply (pesticides, etc.) and not just genes in the plants or the way the Google Bus grew to become a very poor symbol of gentrification problems in Frisco, or the Koch Bros. represent corporatism in politics; replacing the former symbol of Halliburton during CheneyBush. This seems like a process, and I cannot think of the term that’s best at describing that process.

    I can’t breath without that word, so your help will oxygenate my life.Report

    Nothing exciting planned for this weekend. I have a good-sized list of movies that I want to watch, so it will just be a matter of picking which ones I will actually view. Beyond that, I have no idea.Report

    o.O I posted here earlier but the internet ate it. Anyway, here is my docket:

    Friday – chores, work, homework.
    Saturday – errands, chores, homework, gaming.
    Sunday – chores, homework, Superbowl, homework.

    It says something about the state of my something that this seems like a very low-key and uneventful (in the good way) weekend. I only have 3 assignments to do!Report

      Although, in some alternate universe, somewhere, Maribou’s weekend will consist mostly of drinking hot chocolate and reading Iris Murdoch novels, while watching out the window at the gently falling snow. I know this because of HOW VERY STRONGLY this-universe Maribou wants to pitch most of the above schedule (all of it other than gaming and the Superbowl, and the Superbowl is on notice) for the Murdoch, snow, cocoa alternative .Report

    Shoveling snow. Then more shoveling snow. Then maybe teaching daughter #1 to drive in the snow.

    I grew up in this region and am in my late 40s, and this is among the very coldest and snowiest winters I’ve ever experienced. Our heat hill doubled from December to January, we’ve had (I think) a record number of subzero days (as lows -17), a record number of consecutive days below freezing, and a record amount of snow. No actual blizzards dumping 3 feet at once, as we had in ’78 and ’82, but repeated snow falls without melting. Our kids are now doomed to an extended school year because we’ve already surpassed our allotted snow days (and February is usually the worst month), mostly just because of days when it’s too cold to have kids waiting for the bus, and too cold for days on end for the road salt to melt the ice.

    Remember when Sarah Palin said, “The cold, though, doesn’t it split the cheechakos from the sourdoughs?” It’s been a lot colder here than in her hometown. 😉Report

      California has been very nice but it is at a great cost considering we are in ultra draught. This might be the driest California has been in hundreds of years.Report

        Weather in the West seems to be getting more bizarre. Wasn’t it just 2011 when California was setting snow pack records in the other direction? IIRC, the state filled reservoirs that year that hadn’t been filled in 50 years.

        Two of the last three North American Monsoons in Colorado have been the strangest I’ve seen in my 26 years here. 2011 the early part of the monsoon was ridiculous — in some Front Range cities water consumption was down 50% because no one had to water anything. Then in 2013 we had a freakish late monsoon flow up the wrong side of the mountains and a bunch of places got 12 inches in less than a week.Report

        @michael-cain

        Christmas 2013 was the first time in my 5 plus years in California where it was not a downpour on Christmas Day. It was bright and sunny.

        Interestingly, we had a huge downpour in October that made me think we were going to have a very wet winter. There were also a few days in December when it was unnaturally cold. 2013 only had 7 inches of rain. The yearly average for California is 22. From what I hear there is some kind of weather system parked off the coast that is preventing the rain from coming in. These systems are normal. What isn’t normal is for them to last thirteen months and get stronger.

        It is raining today and we need it. Tomorrow is supposed to be sunny again. From what I read, California needs 44 days of snow storms in the Sierras to become okay.

        Food prices are going to go up this summer because of the drought. Farmers are letting their fields go fallow and California is cutting off water for rural communities south of the San Jaoquim valley. There are communities scheduled to run out of water in 60-120 days.Report

        @newdealer
        As I recall, the record 2011 western snowpacks were the result of a string of heavy storms that didn’t start until mid-February. I have graphs for Colorado; it was a very average sort of year and then took off like a rocket in the second half of Feb. Don’t know how bad things were in California before the storms.

        If the current trends hold, I’m also interested in how California is going to deal with electricity supplies this summer. No snow pack means no local hydro; the Columbia basin isn’t having great snow either, which may mean less surplus that can be sold to CA; San Onefre is gone for good. Some of the utility-scale solar plants are starting to feed power into the grid, but don’t know if that can make up the difference.Report
