Weekend!
So when I stepped out to get something to eat, it was the big fluffy snowflakes like in commercials for peppermint lattes. When I went back outside after the meal, it was the sideways snow like in commercials for windshield wipers.
So now I’m back in the hotel room in my fuzzies thinking about how I’m about two weeks from going home where, I’m told, it’s not snowing. Well, not yet. Saturday.
Anyway, this weekend, I’m looking forward to bundling up in a blanket and just riding the weekend out with the occasional excursion for a grilled sandwich of some kind. I’ve discovered that I can hook up Netflix to the television. So far, it’s a wasteland as far as movies are concerned but it has Quantum Leap and all kinds of cartoon shows that I’ve been intending to catch up on (dude! Batman Beyond had *THREE* seasons???) and so I’m probably going to just spend the weekend In Bed.
So… what’s on your docket?
Nothing much going on this weekend.Report
I am making a transition from one type of ecigarette to another ecigarette (I have no idea how long I have been tobacco-free, which is an awesome sign). The new kit is set to arrive tomorrow. So that’s going to take up some of my weekend.
Clancy has me reading a book on baby sleep, and I’m trying to make some more progress on that.
New computer parts arrive tomorrow for the last leg of the new project. Last leg. No more computer-building. In fact, I’ve decided to decommission two of my machines. After I spent untold hours getting them up and running I had to ask myself “What exactly do I expect to do with a computer with a single-core processor?”
And this house. Laurdy laurdy (no religion), I’ve got to do something about this house.Report
Oh, and our internet is intermittently out of commission. That’s going to need to be addressed.Report
“Clancy has me reading a book on baby sleep, and I’m trying to make some more progress on that.”
So is that some New-Agey thing where you get swaddled and sleep with your butt up in the air?
Seriously though, getting babies to sleep well is one of the best favors you can do for yourself as a parent.Report
“I slept like a baby. Woke up once an hour and screamed.”Report

It’s perfect for minesweeper.
Similarly, I have to get serious about upgrading the XP machines. At least one is too old to run W7.Report
I thought I would be safe by going to a light footprint of Linux, but Thunderbird was locking the entire system up. I had to stop an email halfway through and finish on a different computer. When I can’t send an email on a computer, I’m not sure what I can do.
I’ve decided that for my single-purpose machines, like the printer server and secondary media box, I am going to stick with XP and simply remove Internet capability.
I thought you were a Mac guy.Report
I’ve been using a Mac at work for the past couple years, but all the machines I own are PCs running either Windows or Linux.Report
Holy crap this new gadget is strong! I think I’m so used to having to suck mightily to get some yield. I could see myself getting way too much nicotine with these. I might need to cut back on the content.
These are different from the others in that the others tried to replicate the look and feel of cigarettes while these are pretty obviously mechanical. Which I find myself not objecting to at all. It kind of reminds me of the cigarettes in Watchmen.Report
What kind of e-cig are you transitioning to, if you don’t mind me asking?Report
Halo Triton Tanks. Turns out my wife’s cousin’s husband is in a similar boat as me and he made the transition. We were both very frustrated with Blu’s failure rate and required replacements. It seemed like I was spending more on batteries than on juice.Report
Building a website for the Colorado Division of the US Fencing Association, something I’ve been putting off for two months.
Still looking for things that I can do reasonably well on a 7″ tablet. Haven’t found what I consider a reliable and quick text input method yet, but haven’t tried a Bluetooth keyboard (one is on the way from Amazon). Running a stylus around the soft keyboard shows some promise, but is clearly a skill that requires more training on my part. For the record, FBreader is an outstanding e-book reader; pages consistently look the way I want them to look.
This was posted from the tablet and was painful.Report
I spent the New Year’s break sequestered in the home office working on rebuilding my website (http://www.mikedwyerwrites.com/) because I switched back to WordPress and I had to reteach myself CSS coding. Finished last night and I am pretty happy with the results. I promised the wife no more stuff like this for at least 1-year so hopefully I can stop tinkering with it, though there are so many fun plugins it is hard to leave it alone.
Taking a break from hunting to catch up on neglected chores and re-fortify myself for the last 3 weeks of the season where we usually pull doubles every weekend and generally try to load up the freezer with as much wild game as possible. Lots of interesting recipes to try when it is all over.
I will probably see a movie at some point. Saw Saving Mr.Banks the other day and it was good but I need a guy flick. maybe 47 Ronin.Report
I really like the site’s look, Mike. Simple, but in a way that works. (And I’m sure not nearly as simple in execution as in appearance.)Report
Thanks Will. Simple was what I was going for. I’m a minimalist with regards to much of this stuff. The CSS coding is easy enough that a non-IT guy like me can understand it but difficult enough that when I get something coded properly on my own I feel like a badass. WordPress really has made it ridiculously easy to put together a functional and decent-looking site.Report
I dropped my tablet yesterday and shattered the glass. I will need to venture out of my exurb and go to a more affluent exurb closer to the big city to get it repaired and/or replaced. (Why did you drop your tablet, Burt? That wasn’t very smart of you, was it? You should be more careful with your things.) That will be followed up by taking my lovely wife out to a nice lunch and a bit of shopping for her.
Sunday I’ll attend my secular group meeting for the first time since August; I don’t usually go during the fall and winter months because I’m watching football and I often skip in the off-season because a cadre of people who show up are just looking for an audience to say awful things about religious people, a subject for which I have no appetite. But my Packers play in the evening so I’ll have the morning free to see if the leaders of the group have been able to make good on their efforts to squelch the anti-theism ranting and get people to talk about something interesting. And then in the evening we’ll see if the Russian Defense Strategy works against San Francisco.Report
I plan to do a lot of reading and resting. Gaming on Saturday :).Report
Recovering from the holidays – we had a very nice visit with our families, and a pleasant new year’s eve, and an annoying sinus cold, and now it is time to finally unpack, get the house into something like order, and take some baths.Report
My son is visiting on his way back to college, so we are heading into SF for the day. Amoeba Music, here we come!Report
jealous…so jealousReport
It turned out to be a really great day, after Amoeba (he did very well, as he is a vinyl collector) we meet up with an old friend of mine, had bad Indian food and wandered around the city.Report
