I’ve opined in other forae that Bush the Elder’s death feels like a reminder of an America slipping away from us.

An America where a patrician boy with every privilege and advantage imaginable would lie about his age and put off college to instead put himself in harm’s way and multiple times find his life in jeopardy. And then go on to fulfill the promise and responsibilities of the privileges he had been given to the fullest extent.

An America where a partisan might give it his all in the rough and tumble of an election yet visibly and audibly respect his adversary while the process is underway, and sit down to break bread and roll logs with representatives of the loyal opposition when in office. An America in which partisan advantage was not seen as prevailing over obvious national interests.

An America that valued dignity and demeanor, an America that dared to dream of a future in which nation-states themselves lived and conducted themselves according to rules and laws, and an America that lightly wore the burdens of leadership within that global community by way not only of her stature, her wealth, and her strength, but most of all by her example.

That America feels a long way away these days. May the memory of George H.W. Bush inspire us to move our nation towards that ideal once more.Report
