Christmas comes early to the Montauk Catamaran Company boat shop.
Super exciting Pahi 63 news!
The Pahi 63 is the flagship of the James Wharram Designs fleet. The original — Gaia — was designed in 1986 as James Wharram’s ultimate getaway fantasia, and Gaia circumnavigated with James Wharran, Ruth Wharram, Hanneke Boon (together these three are JWD) and a rotating cast of others. (The Pahi 63 boasts long-term accommodations for about 12 persons.) Since the original Gaia, about eight other Pahi 63’s have been built.
But when I first approached Hanneke about this project, she said that in the 25+ years and eight vessels, she’d had some small, but significant changes she’d like to make to the vessel’s lines. These changes would give the boat greater bridge-deck clearance and greater load-carrying both. The time seemed ripe, so we asked Hanneke to develop a new lines drawing for the hulls.
Well the new drawings are here! The new vessel is called the Pahi 63 MKII! This drawing is the “rosetta stone” for developing the backbone and bulkheads that will give Mon Tiki Largo her shape. Seeing them is a feast for the eyes of a boat builder!
Happy Thanksgiving, OT readers and writers. While you’re devouring turkey, I’ll be devouring these plans!

These drawings describe, down to the millimeter, the shape of the Pahi 63 MkII’s hulls. Each hull is symmetrical across the long axis; the only difference between the two being the orientation of the ports and hatches. Though a process called “lofting” (drawing at full-size) patterns for the various pieces (backbone, bulkheads) can be developed from these drawings.Report
Circumnavigated, eh? Unless you’re planning some interplanetary travel, this should be suitable to any readily forseeable sailing needs.Report
