Billion!
For several years now, it’s been assumed that rap’s first billionaire would be either Jay-Z or Diddy. Their net worth was so far ahead of Dr. Dre and 50, the next wealthiest rappers, that no one believed anyone could possibly catch up. They were wrong; they forgot about Dre (NSFW!!!):
As an NWA fan since the 80s, this makes me happy. Here’s hoping that the next billionaire rapper is either Ice Cube or Snoop.
I nominate “Who will be Rap’s First Billionaire?” for an honorary White Persons Problem Award.Report
Dude, look at the Tyrese and Dre celebration video, and you will see that it’s something people care about. Everyone was talking about it today.Report
To follow up, there was a time, an extended time, a recent time, even black artists were screwed out of money left and right. I talked to someone who was in the business back then, tonight, and he said, quite emotionally, that he never thought he’d see this day.Report
The music industry screwed every artist out of money. That was pretty much their business model. It wouldn’t surprise me if blacks had it even worse so on that front good for them. But after the first few hundred million dollars i stop counting.Report
Certainly the business screwed everyone. And I don’t mean to imply that you should care. But for fans, it’s kinda awesome.Report
Certainly, if you were asked “Which magazine is most likely to measure a cultural phenomenon entirely in dollars”, your first answer would be Forbes. It’s porn for people who get more excited by money than sex.Report
I am not a huge hip-hop or rap fan (surprise surprise) but this was good news.Report
It may not be strictly true. But he’s definitely in the 1%, so I guess we all have to start hating him now.Report
He’s been in the 1% for a really long time, but no politics.Report
