As I’ve mentioned before, I live up on a ridge. Living where the land is decidedly not flat offers challenges to maintaining parts of the public landscaping. Normal landscaping services charge a lot of money to keep such public spaces under control (it’s a lot of work to manage tall slopes of grass and blackberries), so being the good, liberal elites that we are, we hire the cheapest labor possible.
Yesterday, that labor staged a walkout, and paraded through the streets, ignoring the foreman, and damaging private property.
Unlike Anti-Fa, they didn’t hurt anyone, and they didn’t cover their faces, and they are really damn cute, so we just tracked their movements until they decided to go back to work.

There’s a big bait and switch there, Oscar. As a good liberal elite, I want my city to contract for services at the lowest price that is consistent with fulfilling the scope, and doing the work safely and in time. As a utilities’ executive, I apply the same criteria when hiring contractors.
As a good liberal elite, I want the government to establish adequate minimum salary and benefits across the board. I vote regularly, and only for candidates whose plank is to protect, and improve, the labor conditions. And to the extent that means I’ll pay higher taxes, or that eating at a restaurant will be more expensive, I’m game for it.
Individual city contracts are not the place where change in labor conditions needs to happen. The contracting process must be standard, predictable, and auditable. The federal Government, the city government, or the government of those geographically arbitrary entities called states are the ones that need to get on board. And they have my vote to do so
