Clichés!
Despite the post title, I’m really liking the new Viet Cong. I never got deeply into Women (insert joke here), the prior band of a couple of the players here; they had atmosphere, but I could never find the hooks.
This, however, has hooks aplenty, even if many of them are time-tested postpunk ones.
Like the Ronettes-by-way-of-JAMC drumbeat in “Continental Shelf”, up top.
Or the Joy Division/Bunnymen/Interpol thing going on here:
This is good stuff! I don’t have anything to throw your way right now, but I am liking this. Kinda makes me think of DEVO a bit also.Report
Speaking as a musical genius, there’s not a huge preponderance of eighth notes on the bass of that first song. Feel free to contact me at my academic e-mail address for my findings on the second song.Report
Yeah, it was really the second song I was referring to – it was originally in the post under it, but I needed a front page blurb so I just snipped it and put it there.Report
I was just pulling your lariat.Report
It sounds to me like extreme grindcore with heavy thrash influences.Report
Next week I am focusing on klezmercore, seapunk and sh*tgaze.
Note: I only made up one of those three terms.Report
A google image search for seapunk is quite…Interesting…Report
One of my “new music” stations played “Continental Shelf” too much, and it turned me off, but the rest of the album is nice.Report
