Saturday Night’s Alright…
It’s Saturday night, what are you doing home?
Fire up the fog machine, mix yourself a couple weak overpriced drinks, spill one on yourself, and it’ll be just like you are at the rock show!
Nothing super-original; just a thirty-minute set of exceptionally well-done shoegaze revivalism from Tamaryn. I’ve played their albums a lot this year.
You’ll hear bits of Slowdive, Verve, Ride, MBV et al in here; and the vocalist (also Tamaryn) alternates tonally between Hope Sandoval’s bleary narcotized lullabies and Toni Halliday’s more aggressive (relatively-speaking) delivery.

The wife needed a few days to herself (she is an only child who grew up way out in the NorCal sticks) so just me chilling with the dog and cats, and a nice Woodford reserve! Back in the day I would have spent the evening at my local, but since we moved to the bay area(ish) haven’t bothered to find one. So right now I have a little Calexico playing, and just reading/drinking/sneaking cigarettes.

There’s a really good live Calexico DVD (Live at the Barbican, I think?) that I’ve seen. Check the Tamaryn show out though, you might dig it…Report
Cool, thanks!Report
Internet Archive has a ton of free, legal downloads of live shows from hundreds of bands. There some good Calexico live shows
The China Theater and Roskilde shows are both good.

Come free live downloads…..the internetz are truly wondrous.Report
@greginak
One of the weird things I have found in the internet archives, there are a couple of concerts I was at back in the day. You say ” awesome, I haven’t seen them in years,” and about 5 minutes into it you realize “hey, I was there…”Report
Who said I was at home, dad?Report
If you weren’t at home, then you must have been on my lawn, and I think we both know what needs to happen next.Report
i feel like this is both good and weirdly beige. it’s pleasant background noise.Report
The first track sounds a LOT like something off the first Verve record. “Slide Away” maybe – the bassline?
I didn’t pay a lot of attention to these guys at first, but their albums really grew on me. This is good (KEXP always does a really good job recording these) but the records are a bit better, IMO (obviously that can happen easily, in such a production/effects-dependent genre).Report
agreed on kexp quality. they do some slick stuff. the live set from savages is totes worth checking out.
this stuff is kinda ehhhhhh i dunno. there’s a lot of shoes in the sea to gaze at.Report
So what you are saying is, stick with the classics? Don’t mind if I do!
