On “Democrats Confront The Real Limits Of Their Messaging Problems

rural 5G - heck even fully implemented rural 4G - would be a vast improvement over the at best spotty state of play now. As the last year plus of trying to do online learning in rural communities has pointed out.

"

Conversely, we’re still in a volatile position vis-a-vis Globalization where the focus on Global Supply Infrastructure without a clear plan for re-shoring runs risks with it’s own success.

I don't expect either party to engage in re-shoring talk. It's too "central planned government" for anyone's liking. The best we could hope for is more federal support and funds - which the infrastructure bill has - for port and rail yard expansion. Second best would be to lean on the railroads to rehire furloughed engineers and reopen closed classification yards, since railroads are now very much into "just in time delivery" through a nasty concept called Precision Scheduled Railroading.

But with so much logistics network parts in private sector hands, you can't drive on-shoring without even MORE badly constructed tax breaks. Which as a general rule I oppose. Making beds and lying in them and all.

"

You might want to check your notes again Chip:

The 19 Republicans who voted for the bill, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., did so despite pressure from former President Donald Trump to deny Democrats a victory. Trump released a statement that called the bill "the beginning of the Green New Deal."

On “Ode To The Big Easy

The road work has embedded drainage projects in it, so a lot of the Quarter has been torn up for a while. Ida added work.

And yeah - how some of those places remain in business is a real mystery. I am deeply grateful they are.

On “Dems…er, Strike That, GOP In Disarray, Or Something

Trump understood. Pinky understands that he understood.

And I agree - this is exactly what impeachment was and is for.

On “Ode To The Big Easy

Prior to moving back to the coast I used to say - only partially joking - that I gained 8 pounds walking from my plane to baggage claim at MSY when I flew home.

Thank God for my love of bicycling.

"

As John likely noted while moving about the city, there's still a LOT of damage in the greater New Orleans area from Ida (which came ashore on the 16th Anniversary of Katrina, and a mere two months ago at that). Insurance is notoriously slow to settle for hurricane damage in the post-Katrina world, and the section of town that Central is in is also subject to a lot of potential FEMA money which will take a awhile. So I believe its a temporary closure.

Plus its the Quarter, and nothing moves quickly in the Quarter. Why should it?

On “A Victim, By Any Other Name

You have an ... interesting ... definition of restraint.

Kyle Rittenhouse lacked restraint when he crossed state lines to become an underage vigilante with a borrowed long gun he couldn't legally possess. Frankly his mom lacked restraint in letting him do it but she's not on trial. He lacked restraint when he decided to intervene in the riot, and he lacked restraint when he shot two men how posed a minimal threat to him and the property he was allegedly protecting. Whether his lack of restraint was greater or lessor then the people around him is beside the point. He left two people dead in his wake.

On “Dems…er, Strike That, GOP In Disarray, Or Something

Half of it is probably true, in as much as any intelligence we ever gather is true. Neither impeachment rests on that dossier however.

"

Please. No one got railroaded into the impeachments except Trump, and he only railroaded himself by simply being who he is. Since he is The Biggest Loser he deserved both.

"

Kevin McCarthy is no Mitch McConnel.

On “Ode To The Big Easy

for most folks in Orleans Parish, having that sort of ancestry didn't and doesn't matter. The rest of the state is very different.

Gretnafest. Now there's an experience everyone needs to have at least once.

"

Growing up in Baton Rouge, I experienced the Big Easy as a sort of weirdly disconnected other neighborhood. We had friends and colleagues of my parents who lived there; other friends pastored churches there. I've lost more Saturdays then I can remember in City Park and at the old Audubon Zoo. And I know every one of those eateries like the back of my hand.

I am sure I passed that gallery many a time, and probably even browsed it a bit. As you well know, there are other modern artists in the Quarter who are pursuing similar art. I suspect, looking closely at that picture, and the artist was perhaps African in her ancestry, though clearly she presented as white. Its a common occurrence in New Orleans.

I am jealous of your concert score - but again it was part and parcel of my growing up. Beausoliel - the iconic Cajun revival band - once played at the wedding reception of an associate pastor of my church. This and more is how we do down da bayou.

Thanks.

On “Restating: Rethinking States, Cities, and Redistricting

What's unfriendly about the federal power management approach out west? the Bureau of Reclamation does a great job delivering hydro power, as does the Columbia River Power system. There's been no move to investigate western power companies for wildfire increases. Absent federal intervention salmon would likely be functionally extinct. And states are not being held to the same fire reduction land management standards being rolled out (again) for federal lands). Where's the beef, so to speak?

"

We already kinda have this problem with people at the federal level who rarely leave the coastal urban corridors deciding what the best way to manage the open spaces in the middle is.

That's allegedly why you have congressional oversight . . .

and its why a mere 15% of the federal workforce sits in the DC metro area. There are SOME mismatches - Interior's most senior oceans person sits in Boulder, CO but generally the folks making the decisions are actually in touch with the resources they manage.

On “A Victim, By Any Other Name

That aside I really wonder if the prosecution is trying to tank this because at the end of the day they sort of don't mind that Rittenhouse was there?

"

A directed verdict is a ruling entered by a trial judge after determining that there is no legally sufficient evidentiary basis for a reasonable jury to reach a different conclusion. The trial court may grant a directed verdict either sua sponte or upon a motion by either party.

Technically the southern side. You cross the M-D line right before you go into Pennsylvania heading north

"

Maryland's Democrats have said time and again they don't want DC retroceded back because it shifts the political center of gravity away from Baltimore.

"

A great many people in the south identify by state first, university second, and city/town third. Even living in Seattle and DC I always told people I was from Louisiana. Still do and I live in the next state eats.

"

Mississippi has this dynamic as well, though down here ion the coast white liberals have taken to running as independents to get elected to county level offices. We haven't had a Democrat elected governor since the 1990's and we lost our last statewide democrat when Jim Hood lost his bid for governor to Tater Tot.

"

Arlington is an example of a county-city combination that can offer guiding lessons on what a city-state might actually look like.

"

Virginia has an example - Arlington. Its a city, its a county and its neither. Granted it's not going to run out of NOVA anytime soon, but its a small illustrative example.
