On “For All Mankind: A Peek Into What Could Have Been

One of my best memories from when I was 7ish was watching the launch of Skylab fir a roadside motel across the water from the launch pad. The rocket looked so small from where we were. But at lift off the ground shook and all the plate glass in the motel were seriously vibrating...it was awesome in the true sense of the word. The saw the space shuttle piggyback onto Tinker AFB when I was a sophomore in high school. I was less impressed by this event .. I was a stupid f-ing blase teenager. My dad however was practically giddy

On “As Mask Mandates Slip, A Preemptive Plea Against Jackassery

You do! I'll get you a ride maybe even a cab ride in the locomotive

"

First email in my in box this morning was jackassery. Blasting us for buying into the mask hoax and promising to share their displeasure with us on social media and that they would never patronize us EVER!

I run a railway museum and we are an operating railroad subject to Federal Railroad Administration and TSA regulations. FRA just came out LAST month! With a regulation requiring masks on all train rides for crew and passengers. Subject to a fine that would bankrupt the museum.

We allow people on the museum grounds to not wear masks but of course require them on all rides.

On “Food, or Eating Your Beans and Cornbread Thankfully Like An Adult

For some reason I can not see replies on this post. Main page says 20 comments but I only see one

"

We had chili and cornbread last night yum!

My husband calls me a foodie, which I suppose is true. I have three of the four ingredients pictured. I use fresh garlic usually but have a jar in the fridge just in case. Salt I have so many iodized, Kosher, sea salt, pink Himalayan, Hawaiian black, black truffle, feur de sel, Alderwood smoked. I prefer to use fresh lemon but have a teenage boy that eats lemons like apples so unless I hide it may not have them on hand so I have a back up bottle. The line I won’t cross is parmesan. I ALWAYS have a block in the fridge for grating.

Some recommendations on food reading: Mark Kurlansky’s Cod:A biography of the fFsh that Changed the World and Salt: A World History both are fascinating. He has more that I have not gotten to ones on Milk, Oysters, American Food, Frozen food, Salmon and more. I really need to get to the library.

The only way that could be better is if the had Tim Curry for the devil

On “Thankful Just to Be Here

Thank you for this I really needed this. Husband and I have covid symptoms but tested negative. Son tested positive no symptoms. I have lots of anger at the person who exposed my son but did not let anyone know for over a week that they had been exposed. Our family will be delivering Thanksgiving dinner to us. I am thankful for my family and that we are all together right now and that my mom is separate from all this

On “Sometimes, You Get Burned: A Personal Account of The Whitney Fire

So happy you and your family are ok. What a terrifying experience.

On “Peak Performance

Dennis, I don't have a substantive comment as I am too overwhelmed at work to do much more thean read. but wanted to let you I enjoy your writing and points of view.

On “Avatar: The Last Airbender (Recommended)

I also am surprized you hadn't seen it before. I cant count how many times we have watched it with the kids most recently last month (youngest is now 18) You should check out The Legend of Korra (actually just finished re-watching last night) Its the story of the next Avatar after Ang. I love it some think its not as great as Last Air Bender. I think its just as good maybe a slight step behind Last Air Bender. I think the world is diferent and different characters so people are responding to that not the actual quality of the show.

On “Socks With Sandals: The Age Old Debated Trudges On

I live in my Chaco z2s untill it gets too cold I have been known to also wear tabbi socks with them in the fall.

On “Vacation Throughput: Comet NEOWISE

We did see it! It was really hard to find and see. The kids saw it last week with their uncle and said the tail was much less visible this time. Hopefully my husband got a few god shots of it. It willprobably be a week before I see images while he processes the multitude of photos he always takes...damn photographers

"

We ate takin the kids ot tonight to see it. Dear husband is bringing his 800 lens with dome kind of multiplier to try to get photos.

I saw Hale Bopp on a mountain in Colorado last year of my undergrad. Since then moved 4 times, got my masters, built my career, got married (4 step kiddos) and lost my dad.

On “The Layered Genius of Miyazaki, Part I

@fillyjonk I will keep that in mind as I rewatch it alone. No way I will be able to get the boy and my husband to sit through it again lol. They adore the rest of Miyazaki that they have seen and the boy has seen more than me

"

Thank you for this great article. I had to skip some parts but look forward to revisiting it and the upcoming part 2. We got for Christmas a set of Miyasaki movies (24 of them!) dubbed in English since my husband has a hard time following subtitles and watching the movie at the same time. I've seen Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Ponyo (which I need to rewatch did not connect to it on first viewing) before. Unfortunately we have not had a chance to sit down and work our way through the box set but I am very eager to do so. This has heightened the anticipation to see so many of these for the first time.

On “Weekend Plans: Lime Cilantro Rice, After Multiple Attempts

Just rice, I mean how hard is pasta on the stove? Rice and steaming vegetables are probably only thing s I properly cook in microwave

Though I also cook oatmeal in microwave but usually in a deep bowl since it's just for me.

"
