The Times They Are A-Changin’
My fraternity days were just 15 years ago, and my house was probably more liberal than most. But although I treasure my experience, that doesn’t change the fact that an idea like this would have gotten you laughed out of the house, and the student involved wouldn’t have even been considered for a bid, and most likely would have been the punchline of a joke if he even was willing to rush the house in the first place. Progress.
Emerson is more progressive/liberal than most schools, even for Boston. I’m sure that helped contribute to a step like this.Report
No doubt, but fraternities historically attract the more conservative wing of the student body. So if Emerson is more liberal than most schools, my assumption is that their Greeks are roughly comparable to average students at other schools (at least other schools in the Northeast).Report
It is certainly possible. My school didn’t have Greek life, so I really can’t comment on it. Emerson has a huge arts component to the school… it is possible this was the “drama frat” or something? Do such things exist?
And forgotten in my initial comment is that this is nonetheless a positive sign of progress. Thank you for sharing.Report
Norman Lear, he of Archie Bunker fame, was a member of Phi Alpha Tau at Emerson…. he did drop out of college tho….
So was Frank Oz: Yoda and Miss Piggy.Report
Wow, is all I have to say.Report
Indeed.Report
Phi Alpha Tau is a professional “communicative arts” fraternity. Progress, yes. But not quite the same as if it was a residential fraternity.Report
Hmmm….I may have gotten them confused with Phi Kappa Tau. Still….Report
A drama frat! I was right!Report
