I’ve read something similar before. People think that they are already doing some good and feel that they can afford to be a bit more of a jerk because on balance, they will still be people that can look at themselves in the mirror.Report

Different baseline: perhaps the people who beat their wives, etc, are just nasty people in general. Immediately after they finish beating their wives, they’re more pleasant than they usually are.
Long-term effects: this study (and other studies I’ve seen) only shows the effects of immediate priming. It’s possible that long-term involvement in prosocial/antisocial behavior has a different effect on long-term behavior patterns than one time priming has on behavior immediately following.Report

I don’t have a subscription to Sage. I can say this about altruism, people who are hungry are significantly less altruistic than those who have been fed.
