The past is another country.Report
The inflection point on this was very sudden in my recollection. Even as late as the early 80s, Columbus Day was kind of a big deal, and a uniformly positive holiday, but by the 500th anniversary, the mood had already shifted in large part to ‘commemorating not celebrating’. And especially when you read accounts of how grandiose the 400th anniversary events were around the country.Report
Lots of variation by geography, too. For most of my youth, Columbus Day was a nothing where I lived: small or nonexistent population of Italian descent, only one place where it was a state holiday. Then after graduate school I moved to New Jersey in 1978 and suddenly Columbus Day was a big deal.Report
Yeah, when I was a kid, I experienced similar. It was a positive holiday when I was in grade school in the early 80’s (but an extremely minor one). Like Michael Cain, I moved to the East Coast and Columbus Day became a day celebrating Italianity.
Then I moved out to Colorado and it’s Just Another Bank Holiday (my company doesn’t recognize it, choosing instead to celebrate MLK Jr. Day).Report
The original Trump in many ways. A man with a sales pitch that is complete malarkey, where it is uncertain how much he was high on his own supply, who nonetheless somehow lucks into unbelievable success instead of utter destruction.Report
